this is very well written, jaq cee, you did an excellent job writing this heartfelt and poignant verse about the cutting that seems to ease the pain, but then the cuts get deeper. i pray your niece finds the comfort she seeks and can stop cutting.

You have swayed my judgements, or should I say, you have added to my limited experience of self-harm. Well done. Continue to put the clarification out there.

Comment from Dean Kuch
Faint hearted, I'm not. This was a magnificent, poignantly sad prose, but it also had an air of elegance to it for me. The way in which you describe this condition has a surreal, almost ethereal quality about it.
Self-injury, also called self-harm, is the act of deliberately harming your own body, such as cutting or burning yourself. It's typically not meant as a suicide attempt. Rather, self-injury is an unhealthy way to cope with emotional pain, intense anger and frustration. I lost a very dear friend in school because of this. He had simply taken the cutting a bit too far, and I penned a poem about it in his honor on this very website. It's entitled "RAZOR SHARP".
While self-injury may bring a momentary sense of calm and a release of tension, it's usually followed by guilt and shame and the return of painful emotions. And with self-injury comes the possibility of more serious and even fatal self-aggressive actions.
Because self-injury is often done impulsively, it can be considered an impulse-control behavior problem. Self-injury may be linked to a variety of mental disorders, such as depression, eating disorders and borderline personality disorder. No one; not even my friends parents, knew that he struggled with his personal torment.
I hope to see him again one day. He is truly missed.
Very thought provoking piece...

I could not miss your poem at the top of the page. It was a pleasant surprise. Self harm can have many reasons. As I used to be a shrink I know how hard it is foe people to understand and even harder to treat it.

Wow! What a powerful and emotive poem. Your thoughts and feelings jump off the screen.
Cleverly and very thoughtfully written.
Your overall presentation fits your subject well.
Obviously a subject very close to your heart.

Comment from CR Delport
Self harm is not something I understand and probably never will. What I do understand is that internal conflict can drive one to do some pretty nasty things. This poem is well written.
