This truly is a powerful piece, and I had no idea that it came from the Civil War. I always enjoy learning something new, and it's a bonus when I learn something from an enjoyable source. This was such a source, your work. This was great writing that I found engaging and most necessary to share with readers.
Excellent piece, Marisa.

What better day could there be for doing a tribute
to "Taps', especially noting how it came to be used
at the funerals of veterans. Those 24 compelling and
haunting, emotional notes have always moved my soul
but none so much as when played by an Active Duty
bugler by my father's grave in March 2002. Those
mournful sounds not only stirred pride in a country
my father was more than happy to defend during WWII,
it also freed the tears I'd been holding back for so
long. I salute you!
thanks for sharing
love,
jan

Oh, Jan, thank you so very much for sharing that with me. It is that kind of touching and solemn occasion that makes Taps so special. I am glad that you found the piece moving; I have always been moved by the music, but most of all by the ceremony surrounding it and its meaning. Thank you, thank you, so much.

What a tribute. I think you manage to put into words what a lot of us would like to say. You did an excellent job with this. Thanks for sharing. Deorre

Just beautiful. What a wonderful story about a meaningful little tune. War is the absolute worst thing on earth. I wish the men who declare war had to go to fight in it. Then I doubt we'd have nearly as many.

Marisa, my friend, this is so excellent, especially now on Veteran's Day. These boys and men gave everything to our country and their people to make life safe. this is beautifully written, and God bless you.

If I weren't entombed in this testosterone ladened male body I would cry like a baby... but since I am so entombed I allow two tears to fall... one for a hauntingly beautiful essay... one for memories of compadres both known and not who have never and will never enjoy the fruits of their sacrifices... but being the heroes they were and are... made the sacrifice for others... and we are the 'others'... regardless of the points of view, we are the others... God Bless These Heroes One And All
God Bless You, Marisa...
And no matter how divided others try to make us... God Bless You, USA!

Easy 'tis to talk the talk
wherever you might lie-
harder by far to walk the walk
where one day you might die.
Thanks for sharing those thoughts and feeling which a few of us still remember. Those that still live. The memorial wall stopped by here the other day, I'm still moved.

Hi
This is a moving tribute to the US soldiers of whatever conflict. Your reference to the ages of soldiers in Vietnam was quite stark. You are right of course and I remain mystified each and every time the UK welcomes home a soldier from Afghanistan who is killed in action. They are all so young!
Excellent piece of most poignant writing.
" so many destine[d] not to return. "
Kind regards
Aaron

This is a well done essay on this important ceremony. It has served us well for active military and for veterans alike. I hope the custome is still alive when I am not.

I am glad you enjoyed the piece. I too hope we will continue the tradition, but it is my hope that one day it will only be necessary for the wars that have occurred in the distant past, because we have found a way to exist without war.
