Your sign and story that started this post was funny, Ann. I enjoyed reading your post. You did a good job presenting both sides of the dilemma. As they say families and politics don't mix well.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

I enjoyed reading your post. I agree we must search out and pray what we hear to make sure it's the truth. Can't even rely on Snopes anymore, because of who they are owned by. Thank you for re-posting this.

Amen, Sister! At least that is what someone would say in the Baptist Church I grew up in. I don't attend that Baptist Church anymore, as I think religion got in way of politics and politics got in the way of religion, in short, we ain't on US 89 anymore.
Two spags...We were seated at (a) table...and I admit (I) was... Good work. Terry.

Common ground found! It's out there, but too few are willing to find it. Terry, I cannot express how much I appreciate your support and your encouragement when it come to my writing. It means a lot and I respect your opinion. I respect it even more when it comes in the form of a '6'. lol thank you, ann

This is a fantastic write, Ann. You are so right. We are not yet beyond the point of no return, but we are very close to the crossroads. I enjoyed the read. Thank you for sharing. Best, John C

Thank you for reading. That 'I know I'm right' attitude -without substance- is something I know I personally must resist ...and I think it is same for most of us. The pandemic has not helped because it caused some isolation and the general political climate is a big frightening to me. BUT you are right, we are not beyond the point of no return! Thanks again for reading and commenting. ann

You were right in your argument about different religions. Whatever your faith, we all pray to the same God, but call Him by one of His different names. To say a Christian is a better person than other peoples' faith, is being unChristian, and not worthy of the person who thinks he is. I love that signpost, and didn't it serve you well? Lol. Well done. I enjoyed reading this. :)) Sandra xx

I love this post and the coded phrase: This is not Highway US 89. The phrase can be a signal to slow down and pause and reconsider decisions in so many different situations, as you point out in politics. Well done.

Thank you for reading and commenting. I find it interesting that we do have so many sign posts -- some clearly seen and others ignored. I guess it is just life. This particular REAL sign post still holds a special place in my heart and comes to mind often. ann

This is an interesting article, although I don't quite see the link between your granddaughter's year in Australia (as a mother I'm not sure I could have handled that, although I sent a 17-year-old to Brown University) and your narrow-minded, friend Dennis. I avoid political arguments because of people like Dennis. I'm impressed you did a good job of defending your POV without throttling him. It makes no difference but when he ran for President, Obama and his wife were nominal members of the largest UCC church in Chicago (which is my denomination). I do question one word . . . person's (charaction) is serious . . .

The connection I was trying to make between the two situations is that opportunities to get off of our specific 'highway' present themselves in every day family situations, as well as in matters of national concern. Sometimes we just think WE know best without truly considering the true situation. For instance, I was about to 'detour' into my granddaughter's life without knowing what research she had done or any of the specifics of her plans.....just thought I knew better. Same with the other situation. Thanks for reading and commenting. ann

This is wonderful on so many levels. I feel like you have three stories here. The first encounter with that fabulous "NOT US 89" sign is perfect in itself. That your first husband echoed those words to redirect your discussion with Jessie is also a great story and how sad but also wonderful that she came back for Ronnie's funeral is also moving.
I loved your standing up for truth at that dinner but that could have been a post all by itself. You have the voice of reason and how much we needed that during the four years of the previous administration. I'm not for either party but I think so much untruths have been spread because of political party alliance. It's so sand. Thank you for standing up for truth!! I hope you get this published!

Thank you for reading and commenting. I agree I possibly should have created more than one story from this post. I was hoping to make the connection among the three very different situations but each one influence by an immediate assumption of being right. For instance, I almost detoured into Jessie's life without taking the time to know what research she had done, what the real situation was, etc -- just thought I don't want her to go -- I must be right and I need to fix it!
For me, staying on my own path, is a constant battle! lol

You describe a mother's heart. Of course, we know what is better for our grandchildren and children! Lol.
But I think you should write this as a book - Not US 89. Start with your first story and each chapter can show us how we often think we're right ... 💖

I'll think about that. I have a couple of books that i am working on and I think your idea is a good one. ann

It's funny to watch Americans talk about their Presidents, and in recent years how disrespected the former presidents are, and it's the position that should be honoured. But it's chasmatic ruts that have developed, the world has slipped in the area of honour, teachers, doctors, the elderly, are not so much anymore, but don't worry, it's a world wide pandemic. Loved the observant post, well done, blessings, Roy
