I agree that the emphasis should be more on the showing than the telling in any story. I feel cheated when a writer takes the shortcut of going from point A to point B. This a well-written, informative piece that keeps the interest of even the most jaded reader. Good job!

Wow, Jay, these were some really great examples. And best of all they make a lot of sense. I t seems that some of my favorite authors are some what guilty of this as well, but I suppose when they crank out a book a year, they have to take a few short-cuts. A well written piece that is very informative, and something I intend to keep in mind. Thanks for sharing your insights.

Jay another rather informative chapter and so lot to learn from your pen my friend. I find every chapter extremely helpful and educational. Well done indeed with this excellent work.

I have graded five stars because I know if I had read this through it would have deserved six. I am no longer able to absorb the treasures of these posts the are proving to much for my short memory and short concentration span but I do know what I have been able to read is very helpful. Petal

Excellent. As always, I imbibe your hard-earned wisdom and knowledge to apply to my own writing. Your list of illusion crashers is valuable and well thought out and argued with engaging examples of weak writing. I always learn a lot by reading this series of essays. Thank you for informing and entertaining.

Hi Jay,
This is such an excellent series.
I am really learning a lot of things
that I had no idea were occurring or recognized.
The narration is well done
and holds the readers interest well.
Very good examples and explanations.
One thing you might define what a protagonist and antagonist are. There is an assumption on the site that everyone knows what they are. But that really isn't true. Some very new writers to the site have no clue as to what they are.

I will try to clear that up in a later post. I had no idea. Thank you for that heads up, and, as usual, for coming back for more.

G'day Jay, we must have just been reviewing each others work at the same time because I just got your review, our stars collided LOL. This is another great essay/story mate. I hate it when the dialogue is interupted and then it goes from characterisation to narrative. I really enjoyed this Sir, not a word out of place. Cheers Fez

Dare I attempt to be a critter for your writing?

You have demonstrated in-depth knowledge of the three pronged subject of this piece and have explained each exceedingly well. The examples are clear and easy to follow. In my case, employing them will be difficult, but you've given all of us much for which to strive.

I'm about to start an adult education class: Show, not tell 101. It seems you may have give given me 101, 102 and 103.
In fact, I think the advice on show in this chapter will be of great help in avoiding those set ups which are all too obvious when you read carefully.
Your use of the Mary, Mark story (and it wasn't me, Jay, just some figment of your playful mind) was very helpful in illustrating your suggestions. I liked the Robert Frost ending. Very slick.
Entertaining, informative and well done as usual.

Hahaha! So you're not gonna make me go back and change it to Mary and Marvin Fowler, are you? Good luck with your class!

I would like to enlarge that next-to-last paragraph, print it out, and paper my walls with it. "Show, don't tell" has never been so capably and effectively expressed as it is there.

I like the way you are biting off just the right chunk of writing pedagogy for readers to consider in a single sitting/lesson. Your examples are clear and interesting, enabling us to see the differences among the pitfalls you describe.
