I think this is a very concise and realistic description of narcissistic love, which can indeed be like an emotional trap, leaving the ensnared one struggling against heavy chains. I do not envy anyone in this position. A very insightful poem, short but powerful. MM

Thank you so much! Unfortunately, yes, but that was over 30 years ago. I've talk to people recently that have had that type of relationship and I feel sad that anyone has to go through that.

Oh yes, like the resin it's named after, who fell in love with his own image, it is healthy to love oneself, to have a good self image, I have struggled with that a large portion of my life, but there is the unhealthy version too, and that is what you're writing about. This may be true for an authentic love that gifted you many years of joy and then for some reason turned sour.
A Narcissistic love/ relationship instead , is from the get go a lie.
They fool you by showering you with their false love, attention, and grand gestures, then he starts to devaluate you.
Some people are trapped for years in a degrading and manipulative relationship.
I think these victims would have preferred to have never loved rather than live in hell with a narcissist.

Yes, I have heard that saying before. In fact, my ex-husband used to say that a lot. And yes, I did experience this poem over 30 years ago. And unfortunately, my niece is going through that. Thank you for your review.
