This was an engaging story, Beth, and I liked how you took it with the opening line that was given. It must always be fascinating coming across caves, I think, as humans, we've always been interested in them. A well written piece. Good luck in the contest.

An excellent entry for the This Sentence Starts the Story contest. Wouldn't we all love to find a stach like that?? As a kid I was intrigued by caves and would go into anything resembling one. I'm surprised I wasn't eaten by a bear. lol Fun story. thanks for sharing.

Lucky them!
This is a very nice contest entry. And very well written, too.
My wife and I were in Greenville, SC. Unfortunately the Shoeless Joe Jackson museum was closed for renovation.
Good luck in the contest.

I remember burying a tin deep in our garden with little notes me and my sisters had written along with a couple of small toys. We never could find it again. But to build a cave and not be able to find it again, well it is exciting and also disappointing. I enjoyed your inventive story Beth, love Dolly x x x

There are many memory flashbacks for me in this story regarding my boyhood. We built forts in Sumac trees along the railroad bank instead of caves or collected tossed out Christmas trees against a garage structure and starting a fir inside to keep warm before things went terribly wrong.

Terrific and highly believable story, Beth. The kids' dad had a laundry basket filled with baseball card and when he went to Vietnam in 1967 she threw them all away. I can't imagine what they would be worth today because they were in immaculate condition. Why can't we find one of those caves? Very well done!

A very good entry for the contest! Is this story true? Your forte is in writing fiction that sounds like it isn't. My friend and I once started tunneling under our garage. We wanted to come up in the middle of the street. My father made me put all the dirt back.

lol. I did a bunch of digging to as a kid. I thought I could get to china that way. Boy was I naive, but I was only five Thank so much for the review. No my story fiction. It was going to be about a cave-in but it decided it wanted to go somewhere else.

I love it! You made me smile with the idea of those baseball cards. I know that some have really gone up in value over the years. I got a T-shirt for the mailroom clerk at my job at Chevron. It said, "If my mom hadn't thrown away my baseball cards, I'd be a millionaire now." He often told me that story. I'm happy that the narrator of this story was able to find those cards. Of course, you had to add a tornado to the story, too. Lol.
Best wishes in the contest!

Would you believe I had planned for this story to be about a cave in when we attempted to enlarge the cave. I've heard fiction has a mind of its own and apparently that was true with this one. Thanks for a great review.

I meant you remembered. I guess it's too late for me to type.

An excellent story, different and original and very readable. The addition of personal history plus the value of the find at the end were both well done. Best wishes for the contest.

I have no sixes. You have ruined my sure thing, I hope you know. It is really good. Interesting, and too bad it is not true. I need to find a cave myself. I am very happy for you, yet a little sad for me. Great writing sweetie. Karen

They can put in the rules that you can't of had a win lately. But, if things are fair, and who says they are you will win and I will be number two. :-)
