Indeed, we do have to be careful don't we, about what we bow down to. Any thing we honor, love or in any form cherish more than God is an abomination.. Well written Roy.

Your historic poem is nice.
I remember singing the song "O Tannenbaum" at Christmas.
Nat King Cole as well as so many others, sang this song.
I noticed in the explanation of Jeremiah you have "4They," do you mean "For they,"? Only a thought.
Congratulations on being Recognized and good luck.

Hi Roy, I enjoyed reading your poem. I didn't know the Jews had the Christmas tree first. Very interesting poem. Well written. Your description was very well.

a nice poem about the pagan customs associated with Christmas many deriving from German folk customs including Christmas trees, Santa Claus, and gift giving. One thing you did not mention which would make a good but different poem is that Christmas celebrations were not celebrated in the U.S. until after the Civil War, as the puritans disapproved of the holiday. Christmas was celebrated though starting in the Roman era during the winter Saturnalia festival as that was a time of feasting and celebrating Christmas then was safe to do. Biblical scholars pretty much agree that Christ was born in the springtime during the time of a supernova in the sky, and not born in December. That date was chosen by later popes after it became common among the Christian community to celebrate it.

That scripture intrigued me, that they were virtually worshiping trees, even several hundred years before Christ, Man loves ritual and objects they see, some things are like sacred cows, Christmas and Easter were both pagan festivals, you are right. God is invisible. Creation is the evidence not the reason. Thanks for the great review. Blessings Roy.

The history of the Christmas tree has always interested me. It does seem that it has nothing to do with the birth of Christ with is the real meaning of Christmas, which also almost seems lost in today's culture. Thank you for the wonderful reminder.

Roy, your post stopped me cold.
I was curious after reading your poem and author's notes and looked up Berean. I googled, What is a Berean? I read a LOT about it. It seemed to me that the Bible could be interpreted any way a person wanted; that ministers' and priests' interpretations were or could be wrong, and that they should not be believed, or rather the Holy Bible can be completely changed as to its meaning. Well, I do believe because of the way they wrote and spoke in those days you do have to interpret, but honestly, I did not like the interpretation of the Christmas tree. To my knowledge nobody has ever suggested it is spiritual, or takes the place of the real meaning of Christmas. It's just a pretty decoration and decorating it is a fun thing families can do together, like opening presents. For anyone to consider them idols to be feared or put any negative meaning on Christmas trees is ...absurd. Are those supposed words of Jeremiah the Berean interpretation? For I do not believe that was his true meaning.
I guess you can say I was shocked. needless to say, I had never heard of the Berean Bible, so this was my initiation to it.
I do not mean to be disrespectful; to you, by any means, I'm just reacting to the poem.
Katharine. If I have misconceptions, please correct me.

That is so true. Christmas has neverbeen big in my family. I grew up as a JW, and some of their teachings I still believe.
You poem is quite thoughtful and gives much to consider about the original of Christmas.

I had no idea the tree was considered a false idol. I just love the smell of them. For years we had a fake tree, then finally we bit the bullet and bought a fresh tree. Game changer. This was an interesting poem. Gretchen

Hi Roy,
This sonnet-like poem tells of the beginning of the Christmas Tree. Are you saying you don't believe they should be put up. Decorating the house and the tree are one of the first things I do to get ready for Christmas. I look at is as a representation of thanks for all the things he did and does for us. there is always a nativity scene under the tree to remind us what is being celebrated.

This is a very well written poem, and I enjoyed listening to it. Throughout the years and throughout the decades, and throughout the centuries man has always had things that he has used as idols, and the Christmas tree is probably one of those as well. I don't know that people today use it as an idea but I suppose some might. Patricia.
