I'm amazed to read you weren't privy to the ups and downs because, for a young child, you certainly seemed on top of things. This is another fascinating account of childhood, with its comparisons to the more safety-conscious society we've become. I loved that little potted history in the middle which really helped to put your experiences into context (very nicely done). I found one small edit below and thank you for sharing, Beth. Take care Debbie

Thank you so much Debbie. Others have also mentioned they like a little history of the times thrown in. It is hard to believe I've lived through so much of what is now in history books.

Looking back, times seemed a lot harder, but in reality, they were much simpler. They just called for hard physical work for the most part, and in truth, I felt much better after those long days in the tobacco field and such. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Ric. I sure you were much younger when you worked in the tobacco fields. We all felt better when we were younger. I couldn't handle it now. But you're right. Things were simpler an we never realized that we had it so bad. We thought we were living in modent times and it was grandpartents were the ones that had it hard.

Thank you for sharing this addition to your memoirs with us. I would spend about a month with my Aunt Olive and Uncle Bob during the summers. They had a huge dairy farm. I always enjoyed helping them milk the cows. My job was to feed the cows while they attached the milking machines. I always wondered how Uncle Bob would remember all the cows' names. He would call them into the barn by name.

I just love your stories. Everytime I read one I am taken back in time and memories are refreshed. This time I remember a summer spent at my aunt and uncles farm in Wisconsin. I loved riding in his old truck every morning to deliver milk to the cheese factory. If I was lucky I would get a sample of freshly made cheese curds! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Marilyn. I loved being on a real farm but they are a lot of work. They have to depend a lot on nature so I would was to have to make a living that way. I appreciate the review and comments.

Hi Beth, as you know I love this tale of your upbringing. Like you, I have always been a ferocious reader. I still am. My walls stand witness to that. I also enjoyed how you lived through the end of the war. I, of course grew up hearing about it. I'm born in 1952.
Below just a few things I found.
Her shirt was out (the)skirt
No one else in class seems(ed) interested

Thank Ulla, I have a eight ft by 16 ft wall with shelves floor to ceiling with books. I can't claim I've read them all because now I read everything on the computer. Many be like the feel of a book in thier hands, but I'm rough on books. The computer is cleaner.

Good morning, Beth!
Much enjoyed.
I especially smiled when I read that you also looked at the names of those individuals who had checked out library books and how such behavior connected you to Jo Ann; I did the very same thing, and I often wondered if I'd ever meet those folks or if they enjoyed/disliked a particular book as much as I did!

Two small edits required:
Now, her dad had bought and (an) automobile dealorship.(dealership)

Thank you for sharing!

Thank you Diane, I missed seeing who had read the book before when they no longer used that system.

This is just fascinating to me!! I love these kinds of stories - real and with lots and lots of memories, both good and mysterious. Your child's memory is impeccable, Beth! I don't know how you do it!

I caught these four little minor spags:

* People were blowing they (their) car horns all over town.
* This was not my dad's dream job(,) and it wouldn't end well.
* Often(,) there would (be) several who had been in grade before us who would have to repeat the
* I think we'd made arrangement(s) to have our parents pick us up.

Also, the word "project" in the paragraph about the paving "project" is in blue. At first, I thought it was a link to click on, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Very good post. I enjoyed every word of it. xo

Another interesting story of your background experiences, written with clarity and perspective. You obviously have a wonderful memory for details. Looking forward to more.

JOhn Denver wrote and sang about being a country boy, and t seems that girls are much alike, and if "A" and "B" can find one another that would lead to a happy marriage.

Thank you Tom. We are fortunate that we found the right people. I think it is harder these days. People don't get to know each other so much in person. They just text each other.

Excellent writing. It's great to read the perspective of a third grader. I remember my thoughts, feelings and emotions regarding world events and the happenings around me at that age very well. I distinctly recall during either the second or third grade thinking that I was glad that I didn't have to worry about adult issues, I could just be a kid for a few more years.

Thank you Wayne. It is funny how some of us still have sharp memories of those time and other do not. My husband tended to remember mostly the bad or scary things that happened.
