-Thanks for sharing the artwork and poem, nomi.
-It is well written, and I enjoyed reading it.
-You give good background information about
where your great grandfather came from and
how he used "wit and cunning to advance very far."
-I'm glad he wasn't born a slave and that he died free.
-The legend is very interesting.
-I can't imagine having 15 children.
-I definitely think you inherited some of their gift of poetry.
-It is a very nice thing that descendants of John H. McAfee
are buried in the same place. That is very unusual,
especially considering the early time period.
-Do you have a way of finding out more about
your ancestors? I enjoyed reading this, and
ancestry is a fascinating subject.

Thank you. I am blessed that my grandparents, aunts, and cousins did some fantastic research on our roots, and then Ancesrtry.com filled in some more blanks so that I have a lot more knowledge.

You are welcome. I am glad you have all of that information.

Isn't it a amazing! What a proud legacy to cary forward from a time which should never have happened. It makes me ashamed of my skin's white colour. The arrogance and cruelty of it all makes me cringe. John H McAFee is a man to be proud of. Ulla :)))

Thank you, but also know that only a fool would be angry at you for something your long dead ancestors did. If you really want to place some blame, blame Adam and Eve. We would all have been perfect if not for their mistakes.

What a remarkable and excellent tribute to your great grandfather and his resilience, and ingenuity.
I have to admire and in wonder to having such a strong family history and roots passed down through generations it is remarkable.
No doubt John H. McAfee passed down not only the land, but his talent and brilliance.
Good job.
Mary

The people who came to America wanted to start a new life and a lot were successful in doing so.
It makes a person proud, when they can go back and learn what their ancestors have done.
Congratulations on your wins and good luck with your tribute poem.

Thanks for sharing this story. More like it must be told. Many people live their entire lives as slaves and don't even realize it, yet sounds like your dad was much bigger than the system that surrounded him.

What sits on that acre now?

Firstly, I thank you for your review comments. As for that acre of land, the bodies of many of my ancestors are buried there. John Henry, his wife Lucy, My grandmother Josephine, my father Herford, his sister Loraine, and so many other family members.

Very cool. I grew up with the audiobook story of John Henry (who I imagine perhaps your great grandfather was named for). It's a great name.

Actually my grandfather's kindly owner was named John Henry McAfee. His humane treatment was a likely influence.

How very blessed you are to know so much of your family history and to have a physical space that is your family's sacred ground.

Your tribute poem written in rhyming couplets tells a story of endurance and grit.

Trsnsported to the US from Madagascar - was this a transshipment point? I am from Guyana and the oral history on my mother's side tells that my great great grandmother came from the Canary Islands. Her descendants are now scattered over the globe.

Thank you for sharing your family history.

Blessings, Julia

You are blessed to have any knowledge of your ancestral root. Many do not have any knowledge of their roots. Thank you for your thoughts on my poem.

Hello Nomi, you have penned a beautiful tribute to John Henry McAfee. Given the time, the amount of history that you know if amazing. I love that your family still has that One acre of land, but I do wish that they had it all. It is a holy ground indeed. What state is it located? If you could expand on this writing, and write about the land, that would be a worthy story. Also, putting family stories to pen will preserve your history. The younger generation doesn't appear to be interested in history, until they become the older generation. When was the last time that you visited the land/family cemetery? A most worthy story. Well written and well told. Sincerely, Margaret

Thank you Margaret. The land is in Plum Bayou, Arkansas, the town I was born i nack in 1943, the last time I saw the house it was in 2006 and it still looked the same. I do not know if anyone is living there but appears to be n good shape after all these years. I visited the cemetery in 2005 when I witnessed my father be interred there. All of John's children sold their land to go off to other states to seek work. Many relocated to St. Louis Missouri, Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit, and various cities in California. A few relocated to Pine Bluff, and Little Rock Arkansas where they resided until their deaths.
