Very vivid desctiption of the boys' pleasure as they enjoy the cool creek. How good that they have at least one lovely morning to remember in the midst of the pain and violence that characterises their homelife. (Hope their mother doesn't get pregnant again!) Well written. Realistic and compelling.

Ooh. Hadn't thought about their mother becoming pregnant. Lol. So, I'm going to safe that's not going to happen. Thank you, Wendy. Gretchen

Nature gives us a respite from chaos in life and we enjoy the freedom just for a while before reality kicks in again. These two have each other and that makes a huge difference when dealing with a violent Father. As always your story is well written and alive with clever descriptions, much enjoyed Gretchen, love Dolly x

Mmmm.... I wonder if Huck's father is having an affair... or a whore... something put him in a good mood.
It makes me so sad that the family's happiness or peace of mind depends on their father. I wish he would go away and never come back.
I enjoyed reading about the boys enjoying the afternoon by the river and picking berries.
You are an awesome story teller, one of best.

Very nice segment. You almost wish to allow their father to live.
That creek sure sounded inviting. I've worked up a sweat many a time and picked buckets of berries (lookin' like I'd been in a sword fight after). I'da been in that creek for sure.

It is messy, prickly work but so worth it. Lol. When I was a young girl, my friends and I would play in the creek near my house. So much fun. Gretchen

Wonderful Gretchen! This is a totally immersive read that instantly captures the reader's imagination. All the characters skilfully come to life and your descriptive detail of nature is superb (I could practically feel the cold water of the creek). Well done and thanks for sharing. Debbie

This is a story that that tugs at my heartstrings. Your writing captures the beauty of Huck and Dewey's break from their harsh reality with such detail. The way you describe the simple pleasures of blackberry picking and creek walking really brings to life the boys happiness even if not long lived. Your writing is so solid. You capture all this so well.

These boys have had a good day with their daddy not around to make like miserable. It seems everyone had a good day but in this house, I'm sure it is only a temporary reprieve.

They don't get much peace but know to appreciate it when it happens. Thank you for this. Gretchen

Menfolk can be tiresome. They will continue to be this way until we stop them. Reading this has bought up bad memories. Good well written story, but gotta go just the same. Karen
