What a concept That should get some action going.
"people got tired of complaining to the city council, so they started painting penises in front of the holes." You brought humor to a an age old gripe.

Hi Liz,
I wonder why it always takes extreme measures to get the attention of city hall? I haven't seen any genitalia show up here yet, but given enough time, and if the word gets out about Ketchikan, they may sprout up all over the roads.
Have a blessed evening gal.

There are times when you must take drastic measures to accomplish what you want. The residents of Ketchikan had enough. Someone was extremely creative and took bold steps that got the government to move. I enjoyed this humorous story.

Hello LJ. It seems like the squeaky wheel always gets the grease. I suppose if people can protest every other issue in the country, why not get creative and get some actual results? One has to wonder how long the genitalia would have stayed on the streets if they weren't afraid of offending the tourists? Perhaps something good does come from tourism.

Maybe I have a low sense of humour... but I found this very funny. I've had my own issues (shall we say) with local government and this is one of the more creative ways to get the point across. Prawns in their curtain rods might also make a point, but this draws the attention to the actual problem while motivating them to sort it out. Brilliant! I also enjoyed the picture of you and your son off on a man-adventure.

Hello Sallyo,
thanks so much for the exceptional review. If your sense of humor is low, mine must be scraping the bottom of the barrel. When I was working at the school, a special needs boy that I worked with came to school with a T-shirt that showed a banana. The caption said- it's always funny until someone gets hurt-then it's hilarious! We both laughed out loud for five minutes.
It was good spending time with Ben. When we got home, he saw the fly rod that I'd had since I was twelve. I only used it a few times, and he was interested in having it, so we practiced casting in the front yard for a half hour. The simplest things can bring the most pleasure at times.

I enjoyed your story. I was complaining the other day. Because of the big pothole at our intersection
It's been that way for awhile. I thought it was hood what they did in Alaska. Sometimes. Maybe it takes those kind of things to get someone to take action. Well written story. Great job.

Hello Brenda,
thanks so much for the fine review and comments. I think you're right. I believe that the folks at city hall get so used to hearing the citizens complain, that it falls on deaf ears. When someone takes decisive action, its amazing what the results can be.
Have a blessed evening gal.

I love the idea and the picture with the dragonfly and its implications is perfect. I think we need to take drastic means to make government pay attention.

Hello Shari,
While it may not be a very nice thing to see, it certainly got results, and no one got hurt. If we can only find thoughtful ways to make the feds work for us, which they're supposed to be doing anyway, we might have a better country. I should look into sponsoring a contest to see who can come up with some inventive plans to make government more efficient that has nothing to do with the vote.
Have a blessed evening gal.

This is genius. When I was in college in Richmond, there was a section where the street lights were out. A very sketchy area and though the students asked for more police presence there, it fell on deaf ears. Several college girls were attacked going from the college to the dorms so the art students painted battered women and drew the outlines of bodies on the sides of the buildings and on the street and sidewalks. The news came and within a few days the city fixed the lights and they started on the construction of a cop in a box station. Artwork can change the world. Great writing and unique subject. Gretchen

Hello Gretchen,
thanks so much for the exceptional review. I don't know why it becomes the problem of the citizenry to solve issues that the government is supposed to be taking care of, but if that's what it takes, grab the paint can and try out your artistic skills.
Thanks for sharing that story. People are smart, they'll figure out ways to get the attention that's needed, it just takes someone doing it. Have a blessed evening gal.

Hello Barbara,
I don't doubt that most cities have an abundance of issues to deal with, but often when I see government workers on a project, like road work, I see one person working, and three or four standing around. We just need to find ways to make them more productive, and if that entails drawing attention to a problem, then so be it.
Have a blessed evening gal.

Pot holes are no joke, my son ruptured several tires and it took a while for the town to repair them, although I'd never think of such a thing to do, it certainly got their attention and the problem solved.

HI Joann,
I wonder how long it would take for the city to act if the folks hadn't taken matters into their own hands. So many cities in Alaska count on tourism now, and unfortunately, tourism dictates where the money is spent. It's frustrating when the citizens take a back seat to out of town guests, but it seems to be happening at all levels of the government now.
Have a blessed day gal.

I appreciate the pic of the dragonfly. In our world of artistic expression, I'm glad to see there's still some heterosexuals alive and well. Just saying. It is June; the month has been hijacked by everything queer. Jack and I are celebrating our heterosexual union. Our children and grandchildren are ever so thankful.
I'm glad the holes are getting the much needed attention too. A real problem solved with creative thinking. Thanks for sharing. God bless you all.

Hi Sal,
I get pretty tired of being force fed ideas that are contrary to mine, but it seems to be on the upswing. Is it your anniversary or are you just celebrating for the sake of your normal union that God established? Thanks for the fine review gal.
Blessings,
Tom

All very tastefully done, Tom, with your visual of a dragonfly! And why would anyone possibly be offended? I think this action on the part of the local people was a brilliant idea and one I must share in my own locality, given how rife these potholes are! All the petitions in the world wouldn't be as effective as this. So thank you for sharing it in your own very entertaining and amusing style (love the suspect lighthouses, an excuse that could always be used if things heated up with the authorities!) Take care Debbie

Hi Debbie,
I don't usually like to delve into questionable or objectionable topics, but I thought that this idea was so original, that it was worth sharing. People are frustrated with speaking to our representatives and not being heard. If tourism wasn't such a huge part of the economy there, the city might never have gotten around to fixing the potholes.
Have a blessed day gal.
