Another fine piece of flash fiction. This one doesn't have the classic stinger in the tail as far as a surprise, but it does have a nugget of warmth. Here, we learn about a condition of color blindness specific for red and blue. It's excellently written, aptly winning a contest, and heart warming.

Great job,
Rhonda

I decided this one deserved to end quietly on a happy note. I'll be back to the stingers soon. (smile) - Jamison

I've never heard of blue roses before. Yellow Roses, I thought were supposed to stand for friendship. Elizabeth Cullinen titled her book of short stories after them. But whether they are blue or yellow, your story captures this poignant moment of a friendship withstanding the shrugged shoulders and the icy attitudes of the kids around them. They seem to stand, unique and bold, unbent, amid the ordinary crowd. estory

Hi estory. Blue roses certainly are not something you see very often. Roses are missing the gene for the blue coloring. White roses can be dyed blue, though. True friendships are even rarer than a blue rose.

Thanks for the great review. - Jamison

Congratulations on your win my friend. Thank you for your notes about protanopia. This is a very cute and very well written story. The picture of the two young girls with the blue rose goes so well with your words. Blessings, Teri

"the dangerous landscapes of the stems below" - that's perfect!

And that last line; again, perfection.

I would not known what to do with this prompt, but you nailed it. Congrats on the win.

Very interesting. I didn't know that there was anything but color blindness.
Bullies sometimes grow and mature out of their meanness, but often long after their hurtfulness lives on.
Best wishes.

Many thanks, Wayne. I hope Ray mends his ways, but Emmaline has the protection and safety of true friendship. - Jamison

Jamison, I have never heard of this condition. Even though your story is flash fiction, it does provide a lot of truthful information about this condition, and you did it in a very positive way. Well done. Congratulations on the win. Terry.

What a very sweet story of true blue friendship, Jamison. We could all use more friends like that.

You learn something every day here at FanStory. That's a fascinating condition I've never heard about before. It must be weird not to be able to conceive of the color red which is such a dominant color in the palette. I've often thought about the possibility of a new color no one has seen before and what it might look like.

Ah, a new color that no one has seen before. There has to be a story or poem somewhere in there.

    Thanks, Jim.

This story, True Blue, is a perfect example of the condition and a nice tale that employs it so well. Lots of players here including Emmie, the mother, Ray the restrained bully, and Maddy the recipient. Leaves a good feeling after reading.

Hi Jamison,
Such a dear dear story... No wonder you won the contest... I just love the entire thought about the blue rose and the meaning of deep friendship... I also love the image you chose.

What a beautiful story. It transcends the color of the rose and highlights the friendship and meaning of the rose's offering. The symbolism is not lost on the friendship and meaning of the offering, it rather highlight's it's importance.
