There is very profile and truth in this particular poem for us to love others. We first must love ourselves that doesn't mean we need to be egotistical. It only means that we need to appreciate and know who we are. Have a good day and may God bless you and I wish you the best in the contest. Patricia.

Maybe that is the curse of pursuers: They think too little of themselves to be successful, and thus, they end up with someone just like themselves, whereas, as we have heard, variety is what counts!

Wise words here, and I adored the sentiments. We have to learn to love ourselves before we can love others. When I was a child, I thought I was unloveable as my parents never showed any love for me. When I met my husband, he always said he loved me but it took me a very long time to believe him. When I had children I truly found so much love in abundance and I ran a household filled with love and nothing has changed since. I loved your fine words, love Dolly x x x

Thank you, Dolly, yes, when we have not felt love, it is a long journey to finally accept it, as always very much appreciated****kahpot

This poem reminds me of the injunction to "love your neighbour as yourself", meaning that loving, accepting, and caring for oneself is the first step towards loving another. That thought is encapsulated in your poem. Well done.

You have gone straight to the heart of a loving relationship with this. In short, it begins with the cultivation of a loving heart. This is a poem I greatly enjoyed!

I think this is fabulous writing. It fits all the rules you outlined, builds tension and then releases on the final line. I do have a slight issue with the use of the dash/hyphen. This is not an issue with you but with poetry in general. The hyphen is the length of an 'n' whilst the 'em' dash is the length of an 'm'. The issue is they have opposing roles in poetry. The hyphen is used in enjambment to join lines and the em dash is used to create a pause, a space. I feel this is being lost in modern writing and it is hard to know what the writer means. I feel you mean a pause.

Thank you, Mark, for your very understanding and helpful comments, I am getting the hang of all this punctuation, and the way you described it made sense to me, I took (hyphen) out and left as is, not sure what symbol means a pause, again many thanks, as always very much appreciated****kahpot

nice cinquain with a strong message about loving yourself before you go looking for love in others. My experience is that this is very true. Someone with low self-esteem is always going to be a risky proposition in a romantic relationship.

Yes, we must discover "love" within ourselves and love ourselves in order to give love to others. Great words of wisdom in your cinquain poem. Best wishes in the contest!
