I'm glad to find out that Artie is a really good guy. I'm glad to know why he's in hiding and I'm sure Heddy will keep this secret. I am wondering how Willis coming home will affect things.

If I treated him so badly, why wouldn't he tell you?" (me?" I'm wondering if I'm reading this wrong.)

I think Mrs. Collette was asking Heddy's mom why he wouldn't tell her. Thank you for this. Gretchen

Very nicely written.
I'm angered that Mrs. Collette is the Postmaster (Mistress?) I retired from the Postal Service as a Postmaster. She should be fired. But this was still in the era of appointed postmasters.
I'm glad you have Heddy accepting Artie's story.

She might just be filling in for a man who's gone to war. But it is a remote island. Just thought it was the perfect setting for someone who wouldn't mind doing unethical things. Lol. Lots of envelope shaking, steaming letters open. That sort of thing. Thank you for this. Gretchen

This is the first chapter I have read of this book and I like the story very much. Your characters are true to life and the story moves along well. I will read more.

During WW2 there was a propaganda campaign in the US to encourage the citizens to hate the Japanese so that they would not be criticised for dropping an atomic bomb on them! This is why Heddy made that comment here about the Germans and the Japs being monsters. The truth is that the German people suffered greatly under Nazi rule, they didn't want Hitler in charge either. The Japanese were stubborn people who fight until the death of everyone and they had to be stopped somehow.

I enjoyed the argument at the Post Office, your authentic dialogue is always excellently presented Gretchen, another talented post, love Dolly x x x

Hitler was a master manipulator. He rewarded those who turned on their own. Most people lived in fear. Thank you for this awesome review. Gretchen

Feeling very sorry for Lester, with that bullying Mrs Collette, too smart for her own good. And I am glade Heddy didn't reject Artie. I wondered if that was his situation. A very enjoyable read.

I wonder what Momma said to Lester, it certainly doesn't seem to be anything good, perhaps referring to his nationality. Now she prepares for Willis' return, there was a lot of anti German and Japanese feeling. Beautifully written Gretchen, blessings Roy
