I find this really interesting and your narrator's plight raises questions for me. What is his backstory? I found these three lines, in particular, fascinating: "Where he comes to grieve over lives lost/And all the things he thinks she should have done,/And failed." There is definitely a deeper reservoir of stories here.

I am a retired counseling psychologist and I specialized in
working with children, youth and young adults who were diagnosed with a terminal illness and had less than six months to live.
Nice catch. You are the only one that noticed.
