This was very cool to read about. Sometimes a tradition doesn't have to be something done for decades. Sometimes tradition is hit or miss over the years. I think the Covid years might have messed with a few traditions. I enjoyed the imagery of the football games on Thanksgiving mornings. Gretchen

They were fun for those few years! It was a great neighborhood when the kids were young.
    Thank you, Gretchen!

What a wonderful tradition to start without any planning. You are so fortunate it kept going until you ran out of kids. Spending an hour with your neighbors on Thanksgiving probably helped you all get to know each other better. Something like this would do the world a lot of good if it could happen in every neighborhood.

This happy-sad true story points out the camaraderie that used to be prevalent way-back-when in those days before cell phones and stranger-danger fears. It is a different world now, but joyfully, many of us remember times when neighborhood happenings would often occur like you are telling about in this excellent story. I enjoyed reading it very much, John.

Cool story about the CDFL, John. Sounds like great fun, especially the way it began in such an impromptu fashion that turned into a tradition. These are the kinds of things that make it so rewarding to be able to look back on the fun family times we spent when we were younger.

It sounds like food has always been a big part of your lives, and even now your sons are chefs. And you, of course, are the resident Foodie here at FanStory.

When writing a story like this, I would suggest leaving out some of the names. They aren't really necessary to get your points across, and it just takes up space. If you will be referencing a person more than once it might be helpful to provide a name, but one time mentions don't need to be named.

Great traditions and memories!
In my old neighborhood we kids had pick-up football, baseball, basketball, and 'ditch-'em' games the year round. Fortunately for us, the parents' only involvement was to call us in at dark. My recollections had nothing to do with holidays except for being days out of school that we could team up. Your post just brought back the memories.
Best wishes.

It is heartwarming to hear about kids playing without the adults stepping in and ruining it all. Hope your turkey day was good. Your writing was real and involving. Karen

Both of my youngest Grandchildren play football and they have the medals and trophies for all the team wins and goals they have scored. My Granddaughter is the best when it comes to controlling that ball! I am so proud of them both. I dare say they will lose interest as they get older though. I play football with them on the field and never let them take the ball off me! Ha ha ha! A fine post John, I enjoyed your keen eye when it comes to sports. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family John, love Dolly x x x

Hey John,
you always manage to throw in that much needed history of something to allow your story and readers to engage to its topic... I love that! And as you know I'm a big fan of NFL, but I find, like my game, my favoritism sways from year to year depending on who takes my attention in the certain way they play the game... they may not be a front leader, but they are entertaining, and that's what counts for me.

Now to your lovely tradition that was spawn out of a playful throw around of the old pigskin. That was such a magic story... for six seasons it rang supreme as the warm up to another magic celebratory occasion. It goes together like peanut butter and jelly. That must have been a blast bringing all the neighbourhood together in such a way. That sort of thing seems to be a thing of the past now, unfortunately. But hey, I may be speaking through my hat if I had one on that is. Maybe it's alive and well... somewhere?

Have a fantastic day my Brother... I can understand your two chefs perfectly... there's nothing like mom's home-cooked food... nothing!

Really enjoyed reading this post John!

With our thoughts we create...
the joy of life... giving back.

Kindest regards,
James.

Thank you for the virtual six stars but equally important if not more important are the fine words within your review.
First, I?m a loooong suffering NY Jets fan whose heart gets shattered every year. But a true fan never relinquished their team!

I?m glad you enjoyed my story of the neighborhood games. It was a neighborhood of like parents and kids we all knew. Today, it?s just not the same.

    Oh well. Times change.

James, thank you for stopping to read and share.

    Be well, my brother.

I like the idea of a family tradition which brings friends and neighbours together . These all make excellent memories for later times. Your football history, different from ours, is informative and provides a sound introduction. Well done.
