Times are changing and I think almost all of the churches have gone to the praise songs that repeat the same words over and over. Some are nict but like you I miss the hymn books and the words to the songs that had messages that almost brought a tear. I like the fact you've don't your rant in poetry form.

I can see where you are coming from here but if I forget my glasses I can't read the words in the hymn books so I found the screen, when we used it in our church, really helpful. Your rhyming is good here and the metre is pretty consistent apart from a couple of lines in the third stanza. Good luck in the contest

Me, too!!! Now that we have our piano in a place that doesn't share space with the cat's litter box and hubby's study, I am free to play the old hymns and I love the poetry of Isaac Watts and so many more. I credit the hymns to my having a sense of meter and poetry.
Even though I grew up in the rock generation and love rock music, I find the contemporary songs lacking melody and poetry. It is good for swaying and emoting to but not giving praise more with the mind. Oh well...yet another generation, I guess.

Thank you for your thoughtful review. I repeat the words to the hymns when I cannot sleep sometimes. Leon and I listen to hymns (usually by the Gaithers during breakfast, and that the start for our devotions. About a half dozen of the choruses in the past dozen years, I really like-but not the rest. I especially do NOT like when they change the tune to a hymn. I told Leon, it's like putting a frown on the Mona Lisa.

Lol. I agree. It's the 7-11 (my friend's term for when there are about seven words and they sing it 11 times!) that get to me. I know we should just go along and be there to worship. My new favorite is Isaac Watts' version of Psalm 23 "My Shepherd Will Supply My Need"

Aw, this is the sweetest rant I've ever read. I can't imagine you ranting about anything. Still, I understand where you're coming from and wish the new and old could be mixed better in church. The old hymms have beautiful lyrics and the new ones too, but sometimes I just crave simpler instead of the big production.

Sending you my best today as always, and best wishes for the upcoming contest, dear Verna.

Thank you, sweet Sal. I love a smattering of the choruses, but I cherish the old hymns I've sung all my life.

This work has reached the exceptional level

I feel exactly the same way about the missing hymnbooks and the ever-dwindling traditional songs. (Plus, you can now get a neckache if you sit too close to the stage screens and go on singing the same verse five or six times in a row like in a hypnotic trance.) Fortunately, I found an old hymnbook at a thrift store and during my morning devotion, I always sing one of my favorite hymns. (Even though the Lord knows I am not the best singer ever, I am positive He smiles over efforts.)
Best wishes in the contest! Blessings, Lily

Thank you for a wonderful review, Lily. I like a smattering of the choruses, but nothing compares to the hymns I've sung all my life. My husband and I listen to CD's during breakfast (usually by the Gaithers), and that gets us ready for our devotions, and sometimes I sing along.
