She and Robert Frost are my fav poets .I am a big fan of her kind of poems, simple outwardly but layers of meaning inside."I felt a funeral in My Brain' and 'Because I cannot stop for Death" ,'A bird Came down the Walk ...just a few example of her brilliance. A bird ... is unbelievable true to life ...Thank you for sharing this.

A winner in my mind. I to like the word pelf. May be able to use that in future writing efforts. Again the notes are extraordinary and lend so much to the reader's understanding and enjoyment. Thanks for the entertainment. Take care.

Barry Penfold.

I have read this several times. It really is a joy. I can see why it is in the number one spot and I want to help keep it there.

Great work here. One of my favorites!

Oh goodness Doug! It must be telepathy because I have just written to you and I'm so sorry that I'm unable to reward you as you rightly deserve. Your story is deeply moving and, if you ever feel like off-loading anything at all , please, please know I'm always here (on my virtual bench!) Thank you so much for your very kind review. I'm honoured by such a story-teller as yourself! Take care Debbie

This is quite a complex poem and about a very complex woman. I imagine in Emily's times if you didn't toe the line in expected thought and deed you would certainly have been labelled a troubled soul. Very interesting notes and poem Debbie. Enjoyed it, and well done. Cheers

Thank you so much for this very kind review, Valda! Yes, a very complex little soul who never even wanted her works to be published and tried to get her sister to promise to destroy them on her death (which she didn't of course). I tried to get some of her essence into a readable length verse. Delighted you enjoyed. Debbie

Beautifully done! And thank you for the definition of "pelf". I remember some of these lines that you referred to but some were new to me. And I always wondered who that man she almost married and what kept her hidden to the world. So glad that her sister published her works so that we all know her now. Another stellar post on a well loved poet!

Thank you so much, Helen! Nothing is straightforward about her and I hope I kept to your understanding of her. Think I need a holiday after this one:) Take care Debbie

Having admired and studied E.D. for many years, I loved your beautifully written tribute to her, and especially enjoyed the detailed author notes. Thank you so much for this reminder of a most unusual and gifted poet who to this day continues to spark curiosity and defy analysis. She was a genius and her work continues to touch hearts and inspire admiration and imitation. She would have loved your poem too, no doubt. ;p MM

Thank you so much, Miss Merri! I greatly appreciate and am honoured by your review, especially given your long term study of her. She remains a little untouchable though doesn't she? A bit like those birds to which she often refers:) Take care Debbie

Congratulations on another wonderful poem about a poet. Your deep and impeccable research took this poem to a high level, with snippets from her life, thoughts and attitudes skilfully interwoven. It added depth and meaning to each stanza. Well done.

We are so lucky that Emily's sister decided that Emily's poems needed to be published. They could just as easily have been discarded and lost to us.
This is another great biography in verse about a famous poet. I hope you are saving them and might possibly publish them when you are ready.

Did you know Emily Dickinson and I lived in the same house? Let me tell you a little about it:
I dwell in Possibility,
a fairer house than Prose
More numerous of windows
Superior for doors
Of Chambers as the Cedara
Impregnable of Eye
And for an Everlasting roof
The Gambrels of the Sky
Let me say tht you painted such a wonderful portrait of this talented woman and taught us much in your poem. Thank You!

I have a love/hate relationship with Emily. I've read her biography, seen her movie, and read many of her poems.

Suffering With E.D.

Now, I don't know how many years
I've suffered with E. D.
But this affliction, for some time,
Has really bothered me.

I think it started late one night
When my soul was on fire,
And so to quench that raging thirst
Of that intense desire,

I grabbed a book from off my shelf
And thought I'd have some fun
That evening with the poetess,
Young Em'ly Dickinson.

As I leafed through the pages
Of that much neglected book,
I then recalled why I did not
Give it a second look.

I geared up for some torture,
And I really don't know why,
But I thought I'd give Emily,
That night, another try.

The letter she wrote to the world
That never wrote to her
Was not the simple Nature news
To which she does refer.

That letter's filled with metaphors
That I cannot construe.
I wonder if I need a few
More points on my IQ.

She wants her fellow countrymen
To judge her tenderly,
But I, for one, refuse to judge
What is not clear to me.

Some say she was a genius,
And I guess they may be right,
But sometimes when I read her poems,
I must have second sight.

I visualize her at her desk
Resplendent in attire.
From out her quill, most every day,
Would flow poetic fire.

Her manuscripts then laid away,
All safe from critics' eyes.
The public sheltered from these words
Until the day she dies.

And so I sit here with her book;
The evening all well planned,
And try to find some poetry
That I can understand.

Thank you so much for your impressive 'review' which I enjoyed reading. This isn't quite fair - am I supposed to give you a review when it should be round the other way:)) But I don't blame you, she can be a bit 'opaque' to put it mildly. You just have to be selective and you can always have your own interpretations (which I'm sure she'd like) because even the 'experts' over 150 years later often can't really decide! You've got to admire her, though, for her modesty because she tried to get her sister to destroy them after her death. They were her own very personal little ramblings, some of which were just scribbled on the back of envelopes, hidden away in drawers. I'm sure she would have loved yours though (did you do that all in a few minutes or was it secreted away for this very moment? Take care Debbie

I have a very good friend who is a big fan of Emily. I wrote this poem about a year ago for her. I could never write a poem like that in a few minutes.

Sorry, Paul, I wasn't suggesting you could. It just seemed very apt for the moment. It's an excellent depiction of your frustration with her which, hopefully, I didn't exacerbate :)
