Yay! I can honestly say this has been "kid tested" ~~ as I had a morning with the neighborhood little ones today and thought I'd share it with them. Holy great poem, Jim! They loved the tale and had all kinds of fun imitating the animal sounds. (At the end when you reveal "it was only a dream" several kiddos decided to call out other animals and have some fun thinking of rhymes for them! If you should ever publish a children's book? I'm in!

Hi Jim! You know, I saw this the other day and I didn't get a chance to write about it. It is a very cute poem for children some might go over their heads a little bit, but it is very excellent entry for the contest. If someone were reading this to children, they could actually do some pre-reading activities that will help the children learn some words and some ideas that are in here.

Thanks very much, Alex. That is a good suggestion to teach kids some vocabulary before reading the poem such as the meaning of hoarse or dare. Both of our young grandsons have good vocabularies because we always took the time to explain new words to them while reading to them and just in regular conversation too. Their parents do the same.

Thank you very much, Terry. I do plan a collection of poems for publishing in book form, but only as Christmas gifts for friends and family. Perhaps I will self-publish it on Amazon too, but it's hard to generate much sales there (I've tried with some novels), and books of poetry, I fear, will have even less success. Marketing is everything, and is something I'm not particularly interested in doing, but I thank you for your suggestion.

Hi Jim,
This would be a fun dream to have. I like all the internal rhyme both full and slant to go along with the end rhyme. I also like that the internal rhyme is good personification with the animals doing human things.
