Unfortunately, stuff like thos happens. If she was prone to fits of violence, why did she have access to a steak knife. Was the cop prone to violence. So many questions. The sad thing, besides both her dying and his career or record being tarnished, is that someone still has lost her. Tragic. Well told. Gretchen

Thank you Gretchen for reviewing. She had no prior episodes of violence apparently. The cop responsible actually did have a previous incident of using unnecessary and unprovoked violence. Very tragic and unnecessary loss of her life.

Good heavens! What were those policemen thinking? A kindergartner could have solved this problem. All the solutions you offered would have worked! What a horrible thing to happen.

    Thank you. Lovely review.
Absolutely. They just weren?t thinking. Very sad situation. Hope it will result in more understanding, training, compassion, and also common sense!!

I cannot believe this 95-year-old fragile lady could possibly have been a danger to these police officers. Please use common sense. I can't say I enjoyed reading this story because of the subject matter, but it is very well written.

They called an ambulance and sent her to hospital, where she was cared for well. (I struggled reading this sentence, I'm guessing it doesn't need 'well' but not positive what's wrong with is.)

Thank you Barbara for an understanding review. I think that is how we would express it, but it could be changed to "where she received excellent care" or similar. Thanks again.

What a horrendous abuse of power! The police and the care home facility should be trained for those with dementia and elder people in general to deal with sensibly and I hope that this forever is changed for the better! This speaks for those with mental illness as well. They are treated abusively by so many policepeople that it should be against the law to taser them without trying other ways first!
Thanks for bringing up an important issue!
Jesse

Hi Wendy,
I agree with you 100%. "We need to do better." Clare Nowland didn't have to die. It was totally unnecessary. I don't blame the policeman altogether. It's the fault of the system. Point the finger at the real problem, and fix it instead of taking out vengeance on an untrained officer. What's the good of that? Two lives ruined instead of one. Repair damage for the future. It's a wake-up call!
Nicely penned!

a suggestion...
"It should be an ongoing part of staff training in such facilities to learn how to handle wisely and gently those with dementia."
(It should be an ongoing part of staff training in such facilities to learn how to handle elderly dementia patients with wisdom and compassion.)

Hugs,
Kimbob

Wendy,
This is a story which should wake people up. In our country, many mentally I'll people who are distraught get injured or killed because the police are not properly taught how to handle the mentally ill. (I am not talking about those violent perpetrators with high powered rifles). I'm talking about the mentally I'll persons who may be accused, but are no threat to others. My sister lived in Vegas for 20 years, and she told me the police there were I'll equipped to handle I'll people. My sister was at work one day and her son called her from home and told her he was suicidal. She called 9-11 with the hopes my nephew would get help. ((He had tried suicide before). Though my nephew was not armed, a swat team arrived. (He has no criminal record). Needless to say it was a scary situation. He's ok. Las Vegas police still do not know how to handle the mentally ill, though.
My nephew is now part owner of a business.
Wendy, thank you for the great story. I'm so sorry for the beautiful woman you write about.
Good luck.
Blessings,
Cindy

Thank you so much Cindy for your caring and understanding review and also for the six stars. I am so glad your nephew is okay now. You are totally right. Heavy/ handed tactics are the worst possible strategy for people with mental health problems of any kind. A swat team!! Incredible, and quite stupid, and disproportionate. Hopefully changes will be made and appropriate strategies devised. Very sad to hear this sort of thing happens so often over there. It?s shameful.
    Thank you again.

Yes, Wendy, news of this tragedy has made its way into the news here in America.
So very sad.
I have no answers, but it surely appears to me that the officer involved was, indeed, impetuous... tragically so.
Well, written and thoughtful.

Thank you for sharing!

Thank you, Diane, for your compassionate review. In your news - for the wrong reasons. So sad. Hopefully there will be more training, even worldwide, with compassionate and effective strategies being devised.

This is a disheartening story, Wendy. Situations like this have taken place in the United States, also. There are many times when the police have to be aggressive, and their training focuses mostly on scenarios that require aggressive behavior. I think this is why we have situations like Clare's.

Thank you for reviewing Paul. You are right, but I fear that common sense has gone out the window sometimes.

I am glad you posted this Wendy. It is ridiculous that this poor woman was tasered and died as a result. Those big beefy Policeman against a frail 95 year old woman weighing 43 kilos? What is going on in the world? Do we have no compassion? I am disgusted by this incident Wendy, those Policemen should be prosecuted. A fine post, love Dolly x

Hello Wendy,
Thank you for sharing this story.
How awful. I'm saddened and outraged in equal measure. How on earth could anyone in their right mind believe that tasering a vulnerable and fragile old lady was the right way to disarm her. Something definitely needs to be done about recruitment and training.
Best wishes, Debra

Thank you Debra. A very understanding review. I just ask myself where common sense has gone, that people act in such a way.
