Chardonnay perhaps might drown out the sorrows but only until morning. You have a nice presentation throughout your poem. The imagery presents some sorrow and despair. Enjoyed reading your poem

You've told us an entire story here of one man's growing frustration, then with his decision to act - while the rest of us will sit at home and sip on our chardonnay.
Very well done!

I think this poem is brilliant. It is heartbreaking and profound. I particularly like 'Boys are dead never to be men'.
I love the underlying irony in this poem. I hope you win the competition. Good luck and best wishes. Jen.

This is really an excellent poem. The images are "raw" as a revelation of the misery that war brings. I like the changes in the final two sentences that are the poet's reaction to your own visions. (I don't think Nazis needs an apostrophe.)

It is easy to sip on a glass of ... whatever and to distance ourselves from the chaos created by madmen round the world. It isn't affecting us, but the fools in power should be eradicated like vermin in a home be it in Eastern Europe, Iran, Chad and even at our borders.

Tom,
Thanks for taking the time to read and review my poem. Unfortunately, there are a lot of madmen running around at the the moment. Perhaps a big spray can might do the trick.
Anyway, have a great day.

Hey i may be old and grey but i still sip on my chardonnay.
A most clever refrain you have running throughout the poem. I guess it is meant to indicate the blase attitude one may have towards war. I think like the poor, there will always be war. Look at the good things you've got...

Well written. This paints a great picture of someone who wants to tune everything out, but eventually can't. I think it shows the dilemma we all experience with pressing social issues and wars that we cannot do anything about.

One could imagine some of the dictators that went to war on the world while they sipped on their Chardonnay, (my wife love's white wine, but just one a week) Putin, Hitler, Nero, Ghengis Kahn, I loved this Barry, most inventive, well dine, blessings Roy

A thoughtful and poignant poem about the futility and horror of war. It is easy to be complacent about it, horrific to be traumatised by it. And the desire to return in order to make a difference is compelling. A elegant change in the last lines as the decision is considered and then made. Best wishes for your free form poem.

A 6 star poem, but alas, I'm
out of 6 stars, so a 6th star
from Heaven. This is a sad
and poignant write on the
tragedy of war and its many
victims. We lose both military
and civilians of all different
ages. A sorrowful shame.
My very best wishes for the
contest. All the best to you. ~
