Congratulations on this extremely intelligent and well-expressed, and the longest I've yet to read, rant. I'm sorry that you can't get past your grief. I truly believe that brains can be differently wired, and have seen my own relative indifference again and again in past family members. Maybe we are to be envied. All the best, Jessica, and may time eventually ease your pain. Julie Lau

Your empathy is meaningful and so very appreciated. Well said!

Your story is beautifully written, and very true. Best of luck in the contest. We unfortunately are at the mercy of the clock. We must push aside what we can't change, and steal every breath of happiness that we can. Thank you for sharing.

Such true and captivating words. Thank you!

Your story is beautifully written and ever so true. I lost my son when he was sixteen, and wonder why I was left to go on alone. Your story is one I can easily relate to. Best of luck in the contest.

Time is truly the great controller of everything. We can't go back, pause, or race to the future. We're stuck living in the present, remembering happier times, the sad, wishfully hoping for the future, or enduring what's come to pass. At the mercy of the clock, we must push aside what we can't change, and steal every breath of happiness we can. Thanks for sharing. I wish I had a six.

At the mercy of the clock, I love that. I appreciate your insight and review, thank you for reading!

It is kind of amazing that we try to measure time. As you point out, it is so subject to perception. One moment can seem to last forever or be gone in the blink of an eye. And there is no way to recall it to do it over.
Excellent rant about our lack of control over time and all it does to us and our perceptions.
Best of luck in the contest.

Jessica, this is a very well-written rant for the contest, good luck. Your ability to write intellectual commentary is remarkable.
Let me comment on the content first. The rant could have been titled a rant about 'Grief' just about as well as it was about time. I have outlived my wife, younger brother and all my immediate family, and all but one of my long-time friends. Your insights ring the bell of truth.
I have no suggestions for your writing. It reads pretty dang good. But two thoughts on the presentation.
First, consider breaking up the long paragraphs. Jay Squires, FS writer of the year for 2022, calls the long paragraphs "A wall of words." His point is that it will often turn off the reader before they get very far.
Second, use Advance Editor (if you don't already) and select a larger size for the reader, maybe a 16. Older readers, like me, will appreciate it.
Your work is excellent. Keep it up. Terry.

Terry, Thank you so much for your review. I'm sorry to hear of the loss you've endured. Your grief is ever present, I gather. As humbling as it is to know my words and experiences rang true to you, I'm still deeply sorry for it.
I have much to learn, so your feedback is greatly appreciated- And valuable it seems, as I am much happier with the presentation after implementing your suggestions!!
Thanks again:)

That looks so much better. Your FS readers will enjoy it. You can play around with some different looks like Bold, and different fonts, etc. till you find what you like best. Terry.

Great rant. Fantastic ideas about just how malleable time is. As you have said, it can fly by, come to a standstill, take forever to pass, be gone in a flash. I thoroughly enjoyed your rant. It gave me time to reflect....

Thank you for sharing this rant contest entry with us. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I have read any of your post. I am glad I caught this one. It's very well written. Yes, time does seem to depend on circumstances and losing a loved ones, is very difficult. Good luck with the contest.

Welcome to FanStory, Jessica! It is so wonderful to read you today. Sorry to be so late in greeting and reviewing. I'm blind and don't get out of my fan base as much as I would like. Dolly recommend this, so I had to come by.
This is marvelous writing, Jessica, and so deep and articulate. I agree with many things you said in regards to time and the adage: Time heals all wounds. No, it doesn't. Maybe it dulls as our mind goes botts, but unless it's dealt with, it ripens over time.
Sending you my best today as always, and my very best wishes for the upcoming contest.

Hi Sally, thank you so much! I?m humbled by your kind and welcoming words. It means quite alot to me that Dolly suggested, and that you took the time to check it out. This piece in particular is very close to my heart. My words were a bit frantic, I know. I would normally tidy up, but this being a "rant" I decided to let it all hang out. Truly, I?m honored that you enjoyed it! I?ve been here barely a month now, so I value your feedback very much!

Anyone who has pondered the real meaning and relevance of "daylight saving time," can relate to the idea of time being an evil, artificial construct to torture human beings...worthy of a well wrought rant...which is what you gave it. But, I think you also rant and rave about loss which is a far more tangible concept and one that even time must bear. Lost time happens. It is more meaningful to grieve loss and to be consumed by it. Don't get me wrong, this discussion is thoughtful, righteous and understandable, but it's deeper than time. It's about wounds that do not heal in time. It's about loss. Take time out of the equation and you would still feel grief. We all share it because we all know loss. Sorry for yours. Sorry for mine. We can only find comfort in each other. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you for your awesome review! I admit, I hadn?t intended on diving so deep into the grief pool originally. Yes, my struggle with grief and PTSD has provoked many frustrations and contemplations regarding time. I love what you said about taking time out of the equation. It was moving and hit me hard- yes, grief is universal. Grief is also subjective.. as is time. Take time away- and, really, you have nothing. No time. But before I get carried away and jump right back in that pool lol I agree that they?re two different ballgames, entirely. And once I got started writing it ? Well, you know. Normally, I would?ve cleaned that up. But it being a "rant" I decided to just ..let it fly, so to speak. I completely get where you?re coming from and appreciate your thoughts so very much!
