Thank you, and thanks for your vote. Des was a difficult person to live with, but we got along quite well. I think he was impressed because I didn't let his narcissistic ways intimidate me.

I really liked this. It was kind of funny in that his spirit was still carrying on like normal. It was his way or the highway. But im sure the past four years have been tough. I am truly sorry for your loss. Great story. Good luck in the contest. Gretchen

Thank you. Yes, I kind of miss the ornery old guy. I was never impressed with his macho man persona. I think that is why we got along as well as we did.

This fits the bill of the contest perfectly! The fact that it's a true story makes it spooky. Stubborn in life and stubborn in death is what we are told. I believe! This was perfect! Much success. Best, JohnC

Thank you. I think Des believed he could defeat death with sheer willpower. After I thought about it, it didn't surprise me that Des returned to let me know how angry he was.

This is a great little story. It kept my interest till the end. I suppose ignoring the problem was Des' way of handling the situation. What you wrote about him not being easy to get along with; neither was mine. We were married 71 years by respecting each others differences. Best wishes for winning the contest.

Thank God that you got him to a doctor; he must have had pain that was unbearable. I like your story because it gives us the thought of how strong-willed some people can get, even when they are terminally ill.

Thank you. Des should have seen a doctor long before I sent him by ambulance. They said if he had been having regular checkups, they might have caught cancer in time to save his life. Men can be so stubborn sometimes.

Men can be stubborn when seeing a doctor. I know exactly what you're saying.

Working in the health field, many patients often are in denial of their diagnostics, especially with bouts of Cancer the second time. Many refused treatment, knowing in some cases the obvious. As a caregiver, you can only do the best you can. I'm sure you did your best to comfort him until his passing. I wish you the best.

Thank you. Des would never admit to pain or discomfort of any kind. Why, I don't know. I think it was a macho, conrolling thing with him. He had major control issues and lost a lot of friends because of it. I loved him anyway.

Wow! How eerie that must have been for you. It was beautifully told. Your husband was consistent to the end (and beyond!)
I guess he thought his philosophy--to defy death with all his might--may have given him comfort in life, but it doesn't seem to have after his death. I wonder that if there is life after death, it might be better to gently accept your impending death, and maybe that will enable you to rest comfortably after it finally comes.

Thank you. I don't know if there is life after death, but I do know I most certainly heard Des yelling that night, and he was angry. I'm sure the dog heard him, too. Des was a strong willed person, but I did change him into a cat lover. LOL

I am sorry for your loss. It seems like your late husband wouldn't alter who he was until the end. You did well in telling how those last days went. And at the end you got in, a possible supernatural encounter by voice.
Good luck in the voting.

Thank you. It wasn't a possible ecounter, Des was definitely letting me know how angry he was because he had died. I did wonder if maybe he thought he was still alive because he berated me for cremating his body. Who knows?

There is much honesty in this write and Des sounds like quite a character and he had the audacity to haunt you when he died! You managed to bring some humour into this sad event in life and I am so sorry for your loss, a well written tale about a man who fought with death and lost, love Dolly x

Thank you. Des was quite the character in life and in his death. I believe he thought he could defeat death by sheer force of his will. It was a scary moment, but when I thought about it later I wasn't surprised.

My Father had the same thoughts, he fixed almost everything in life and when he was dying he refused to believe it x

I'm sorry for your loss. That is quite amazing the way you heard his voice! Your writing style has an ease to it draws the reader in. It sounds as though life was a challenge but somehow you made it work and meant a lot to each other. I hope you find your peace as he does his. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. It was a scary moment, but not too surprising if one knew Des. I believe he thought he could stop death by sheer will. He was strong willed to the extreme. He lost on one issue, though. I made him into a cat lover. I did love the guy despite his mercurial disposition.
