Debi Pick Marquette speaks with delighted candor about the experience of being herself; she celebrates the good and has philosophical fun with the less good, the downside of karma, its sometimes inexplicable withdrawals from the life force. In her excellent poem "Crazy and Wild," Ms. Marquette uses four stanzas of rhyming couplets to extol the richness of human being.

Thank you so much Frank. I am so very pleased with your kind review as you know how very much I respect your opinion! Not to mention how much I have been thankful for your friendship. Your kind comments meant a lot to me, as the only way I could write this had to be with some humor, as I have nothing but the good to express for my life which. I have much to be thankful for. Thanks again my friend.

You have a wonderful sense of humor, debi, as is clear in the first two lines. Did you ever write about how you lost your legs? Love the play on words with 'iron-ic'. You look on the bright side of things (grateful you don't have Alzhezmer's). You grandchildren are beautiful. Are they all from the same parent? You are attractive too. Great hair!

Oh Spit fire, you are so very sweet! I don't think I have written about it too much, but I have had Lupus for the last 42 years. Since then, it has attacked many organs, stage 4 kidney disease, lung cancer a few years back, as well as weakened my bone, muscles and joints to the point of not walking. When I lost my ability to walk, I had let it.go because my system wasn't up for more surgery after 2 shoulders, one ankle and two spine surgeries. My knees were bone on bone and my legs were bowing out and if I put them close together they looked like a big X. All the bones and muscles were deteriorated. So they had to go in and put rods and other hardware to build them from the hips down to my feet with two new knees as well. They did the first one in July and the second in early September. I have had therapy here and HHC nearly every day working on the first one and getting the other one ready, until I went for this last one. I just got home from hospital on Friday. And my team of PT was already waiting here to help me with the transition. They wanted me to go back to a care center but I wouldn't..I spent three months there for my leg and ankle a couple yrs ago. But I had to because there was no weight bearing on that one. Thank you for all your lovely comments. I thank you for your well wishes, kind comments and for your gracious gift of six stars. I so appreciate your kindness my dear friend. And btw; my legs are now as straight as can be. : )
-
Bless you, Debi. You are a miracle women and inspiration to others. There is someone else in the picture with you--a husband, brother, father?? I appreciate your remark about your legs being straight now, and I'm glad you discovered FS. This writing site keeps me from being blue or bored.

I agree. Being immobile for so long could have been about sitting around watching tv and eating.
(You'll have to read my poem about Covid food. You may get a kick out of it) Anyway I love writing and had just finished a large book with poems and pictures of everyone in my family. Each person got 2 pages in a 12X12 inch book w their poem and pictures of their life and I wrote one for husband, 3 kids, their spouses,
6 grandkids ( two more came after this picture on my poem) siblings, parents and best friend. And a few prayers and relatable poems that I'd been writing since I was 8 yrs old. So they all got it last Christmas. It was my bucket list biggie. Expensive but worth it. After that I joined FanStory and I believe God put that and you wonderful friends in my path. Btw; I am known as the chatty one here. Lol! Is the picture that you are talking about my profile. Yes I cut my husband half off and should either put him in or cut him out completely, haha! That is a more recent photo. The one on my poem is about eight yrs old, but the only one I could find fast that showed us having some fun. There are others but are more posed like. Now Sweetie, whenever you get a chance, I would love to know more about you. But only if you care to share. Thanks again!

Thanks for the info, debi. I turned eighty on June 24. My husband was diagnosed first with diabetes at age 69 then with the beginning of vascular dementia at 73. I turned into his caregiver as he got worse and damaged my spine (so I have to use a walker now) when he insisted I pick him up after his third fall one night. He hated for me to call 911 again.
Anyway, I sold our house and put us into assisted living when I couldn't handle taking care of him and house. We lived together for another year and a half. But when my blood pressure reached 180 the doctor warned I wouldn't live much longer if I didn't put Frank in memory care. So I did and he was not a happy camper. I dealt with guilt a lot because he never forgot my name or the names of our son and our daughter and insisted I get him out of there. I was getting ready to try to care for him again. Two days before I planned to move both of us to a less expensive assisted living place, a nurse came into the main dining room, pulled me aside, and told me Frank had just died!
Apparently, he choked on a piece of pulled pork while eating dinner. A staff member tried the Heimlock (sp?) Maneuver to no avail. Death was instant. Paramedics pulled a long sting of pork from his throat.
So I became a widow on December 29, 2019 around five-thirty in the evening. He had just turned 82. WE had been married 54 years.
His death was really a godsend since the pandemic and lockdown came 13 days later. He would not have understood why I couldn't visit him or why he couldn't leave his room.
There are times when I miss him so much in the wonderful years we had before he lost his memory. His mother had the disease too. It is hereditary. I pray our children and two grandchildren escape the gene. So that's my story. We both have had our crosses to bear.

Thank you Shari for telling me your story. I understand your guilt and sadness, but at that point he didn't realize what was good for him and you. But what a stressful time for you. I am so sorry. My mother in-law had it and went from knowing us all, to a kinda comical character for a while, to a vegetable within a year. It was just a matter of time and yet, after 48 years with my husband, I understand you completely. We both say we dread the day that one of our chairs will be empty. So bless you for all you have dealt with. When you were taking care of yourself by putting your husband in that care, you were doing exactly what the end of my poem was about. My very wise mother used to always tell me, keep all the good and throw away the rest. Meaning much like the serenity prayer. Stress and unhappiness, if you can change in your life, change it. What you can't, find gratitude for the good. Doesn't mean you were throwing out your husband, just the parts that were hurting you while you cared for him. Bless you for being such a good wife. You truly were doing you both a favor. You are an Angel and you should be proud for making such wise decisions.
-
Your picture book sounds like an amazing gift. I hope everyone appreciates your hard work. Before my husband passed, one of my angels sent me an 'angel' to be my part-time caregiver should I need one. His name is Jonathan and he's now 28. A good looking Spaniard who was the med tech where Frank and I lived. He has helped me move twice now and has changed jobs to work as activity director and manager in an assisted living in Winter Springs, Florida. He had a beat-up old car that always broke down so I gave him mine when I gave up driving. He lives 25 miles from me and visits on one of his days off to take me wherever I want to go. He's single and lives in a huge house with his mother and grandmother who consider me part of their family now which is nice.
That's all for now. Time to take a shower and start my day.

Oh Shari, I love hearing about Jonathan. What a wonderful young man. Wow, that would even come on his day off to help you. And how kind of you to give him the car to use. Sounds like the old fashion way we were raised. I am so happy that God led this man to your path and that you are like family to mother and grandmother too. However not surprised as you are just a lovable woman. Of course you already knew that. God Bless you as you needed them as much as they needed you. I am so touched by this loving story. Thank you for sharing that with me. I love feel good ones such as this.

Dearest Debi, first you were Super Woman and now your are the Bionic Woman--lucky Glen! I, too, run late, and I celebrate the little things in life.
I especially liked:
Doctors joke in last ten years, I'm almost bionic
Hardware thru most my body, feels a little bit iron-ic
(Going thru the scanners at the airport must be a trip.)
Great photo of you and your grandkids. Your love shines through.
A pleasure to read. The hope of you walking for Christmas makes
me smile. As this is a contest entry, I wish you good luck. Margaret ~ LateBloomer
p.s. I did not mean to give you a five-star review. It should have been a six-star review. Computer would not allow me to change it. My apologies, TSOTU. Margaret

Thank you for the thought Margaret, but five and you are all I need. You and your sweet comments. Thanks for seeing the humor in this, as the last thing I wanted it to look like asking for pity. I am just proud of this miracle that has been handed to me. Your support for the walking by Christmas has been priceless. Thank you so much for all the support and it goes without saying that I am there for you too, always! Thanks for all your kind comments. You are so very appreciated!

I no longer procrastinate. Wait I take that back. I am always early now, but when it comes to some of my other jobs that I would rather not do, or too hard to do right now, I put them off if possible. I would rather be on FS, but anyway I hope you got the double meaning on that line. And thank you so much Helen, as you are so special. Thank you for the very kind comments and for the gracious gift of the six stars. I appreciate it so very much my dear friend.

Awe Roy, you are so sweet. And we have two more grandsons since this picture. They are all precious and like I told my kids once (jokingly) that grandkids are our reward for keeping them through all those years. Actually they were pretty good and now are here to help us as much as they can. Through the Grace of God I must have done something right to deserve them and all their time off of work to be with me almost every day in my long hospital stays. And now these surgeries are behind me. Christmas will be a more than normal special one this year. My husband and I have a song that we have called it ours. It is 'Can ai have this dance for the rest of my Life?'
And on New Years Eve he has a surprise for me, but all I know is that it's about our song. I don't know why I had to share that with you, but it felt good. I am so blessed by so many things and I truly treasure our friendship Roy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being such a special friend. Debi

You did a great job with your contest entry, Debi. I enjoyed
reading it. The picture included was awesome. I could tell from
your smile how much you loved (and always will) your grandkids.
Your words were well chosen, the rhymes worked well, too.
There was smooth flow and great descriptive words which created
great imagery. I could see you interacting with the kids as a 'big
kid' yourself. You have become 'The Bionic Woman,' remember that
tv show? You are being the YOU that your family and FS family loves.
Everything about you made/makes you who you are today.
Best wishes in the contest, Jan

And Jan, your friendship is part of what I love most here. You are such a blessing to me and I have been so tickled with every sweet poem, thoughtful comment and I feel the love too. I could go on and on, from how you write me a message for feedback instead of putting in your review to going out of your way to help me learn something new. I don't think it's humanly possible to tell you how much it is appreciated. Shoot, now I can't see thru my tears. So thank you for this beautiful review and kind words. Love ya so much!

Lol, well Kitty they do think that I am a fun grandma. That picture was before we had two more grandsons, but is one of the only pictures I have of us having fun together. It is about 8 years old. I have gotten a little older since then and so have they. The two oldest graduated last year. Oops, it may be closer to ten years old. Thank you for your very lovely review as always. I just didn't want to write something boring and thought it might be fun just to put it all out there. I do have much to be thankful and I thank you for being one of those that I count as a friend as a blessing here. So appreciate it my dear friend.

Thank you so much for your very kind words for my poem. If you have grand kids, you most likely feel so much of the same. Yes they are so precious and this picture is about 8 yrs old. We had 2 more grandsons since and the older girl and boy have now graduated. My profile is a more recent picture. Thank you again for such a lovely review and comments my fr.
