This is a very well written acrostic poem. It is so heartbreaking and also so true for so many veterans. I wish you lots of luck in the competition. Best wishes. Jen.

The rigid construction really seems to mimick that image of the cage. Nice job of form underscoring theme here. I liked the images too; the rage that seems to shake the bars of the cage. We get all that frustration at not being able to break out of the pain. estory

Thanks man. I wrote it, but the feelings came from a suffering vet. I appreciate you and your review.

This hits home for so many of us, and I thank you for posting it. I have a nephew who came home a completely different person from his time in the Marines, and my heart aches for him. Good luck to you and to your family member who is suffering. And thank you for your service.

Well done! Yes, the memories of war are indeed a cruel cage, and your informative notes add meaning. My father lost his twin brother in the war. My grandfather also suffered PTSD from his war experiences. Excellent poem, vivid, meaningful, descriptive.

Excellent job of capturing the pain and helplessness of mental illness. Particularly liked the poem's last line. The cage metaphor is so appropriate. Saying a prayer for your family member and all the vets that find themselves similarly caged.

My son was a medic in Afghanistan. He still has PTSD. Won't talk about it. It's true that though the body may survive, the mind might not. Your poem was heartwrenching and sad. Beautifullybwritten. Good luck in the contest.

Douglas,
This deserves a six, but I'm fresh out. I have often said that throughout history women have under appreciated the sacrifices men make to go to war and take lives. It is no small price they pay for our, and the Children's, protection and safety. Thank you for writing this.

Great job! You cleverly incorporated those words that that so many veterans feel, even if they sometimes can't exactly define them.
Sometimes it can be difficult to read works involving these topics; however, not as difficult as what the veterans have been through and it is important to continue to read, research and write about these difficult subjects...lest we forget.
My father served in both campaigns as well. Thanks to you and your family member for serving! And thank you for sharing such a personal work!!

You convey very well the feelings of a war veteran. Indeed, for many of these warriors the horrors of war continue to manifest in nightmares and feelings of isolation. I will never be a fan of AABB. rhyming, but I liked your acrostic.
