Great story. I bet these geniuses heard their parents repeat this story for years as a testament to their stupidity.
My cousins used to set off cherry bombs on the farm every fourth of July, they have quite a punch. They got their fireworks in Canada. They would cross the border on field trips with the school and hid a large cache of fireworks under the backseat of the bus.
Best wishes,
Mary

Mary, LOL, thank you for your story and for reading mine. Their parents did tell that story often, that is how I heard about it. Terry.

An amusing anecdote for all except, I imagine, the parents! It sounds as if these two learned to think things through better in later life. I'm with you in liking "celebrating the fourth with a fifth starting on the third"! An inspired piece of wordplay.

Carefully placing the Styrofoam over the water in the toilet, our two scientists put both cherry bombs on top of the Styrofoam (and) lit them, and closed the toilet lid. (,) It just sounds less jerky, in my opinion.
Great story. Thank you for sharing and have a great week.

Hi, I enjoyed this. I like your laconic style. The bit about the booze is good. It reminds me of somebody but I can't think who. I can't really criticize, since I wouldn't attempt this sort of thing. Perhaps say 'they were smart, they were very smart', but then just precis their accomplishments a bit. Otherwise, very funny.

Your story highlights how very bright people (especially teenagers) can be stupid as well. It makes for an entertaining story to hear of the outcome of their explosive investigation - just glad it wasn't at my house.

Hello Terry,
All the book learning in the world is no match for some on the job experience in life sometimes. I don't know what got into those guys, except that they were typical teen boys. My best friend and I got the recipe for making gunpowder. We bought salt peter and sulfur at the local drug store, and used ground up charcoal briquettes. Fortunately we never got around to learning how to pack it or I might not be here to read your story or tell mine. Well done.
Have a blessed evening.

Tom, LOL, you have a great story there, maybe think about writing it. Thank you for reading, Terry.

I loved this story, Terry, because there was a rash of cherry bombs in the toilets of most of my friend's homes in the eighties. A good portion of them acquired new bathrooms in that decade. Good memories! I think?

I wonder where they thought the blast would go? Although I have to say, I didn't know cherry bombs were that powerful.
I do, now :)
I think everybody has done something dumb in their lifetime - something really embarrassing. Keeps us humble - to an extent.
Sounded like the mother took life as it came. And the very erudite father was totally astonished at the boys' lack of sound judgement. Ah well, they got it under their belt and probably laughed about it with the guys years later.
A very entertaining public service story.

Katharine, Thank you very much. Two cherry bombs are about a quarter of a stick of dynamite depending on the cherry bomb used. Terry.

wow. good thing I stuck to sparklers!
-
Shoot with that million-dollar smile you don't need any sparklers!
-
thanks, Terry! That's the neatest thing I have heard in ages! You certainly made my day!!
Comment from Sandra Stoner-Mitchell
I'd never heard of a cherry bomb before. It must be one heck of a firecracker!! You just couldn't make this up, could you? Two very clever kids, nearly blow the bathroom to bits. I thought it was good that the parents made them work to pay back the cost of the damage. I really enjoyed reading this, well done!! :)) Sandra xx

I loved this, it's probably just as well they weren't anywhere near it, one wonders what possesses these young genii, as to whether they really think through their exploits, or is being a twittish youth mandatory. My brother once dug a hole in our back yard, camouflaged it, and lured my mother into it, and she fell in, she wasn't hurt, but he went missing for a couple of days, beautifully written Tom, blessings Roy
