I love this story. I remember when I was maybe thirteen, we had no power. It was this time of year. We were living off the gas stove like that. I braved the coldest bath. The water heater had not functioned in months and my mother thought I'd die in there. But when I walked out in my pajamas, I felt instantly twenty degrees warmer! That was my feat of the decade, I guess. But yes, I remember having that gratitude too, just being glad to not be freezing cold. God Bless.

You are a wise man to take these hardships and learn gratitude from them. If everyone would realize how much we have to be grateful for, we'd be a more satisfied people. I've never been through the hardships you have, but I've been through enough to realize how well it turned out. You've painted a very vivid picture with your words. Well done.

Well, done author. If I had never experienced similar perhaps it would not intrigue me so. Living in the south during WW2, I know the meaning for need. A good story. Hope it does well in the contest.

Not your usual form of poetry I know and if you are anything like me you are possibly fearful of branching out into forms you are not familiar with. It took me years to even try free verse!

I enjoyed your tale of this extra-cold morning, so cold that there was a danger to life and property. I have spent all my life in temperate and even tropical climates so ice and snow are not familiar to me. The worst we can expect here in the North of New Zealand is a light frost sometimes.

You did well in your poem to describe the precise de5tails of what you observed, thus giving credibility to your description.

Good luck in the contest.

Steve

Thank you Steve, unchartered waters for certain and I have chosen to live in far more moderate winter western climates myself.

Someone who has experienced having little more than life itself. Knows all too well what it means to be without material comfort. One who has never experienced want may one day suffer if ever forced to do without. Threatened with the possible loss of creature comfort is not as fear inducing to one who has experienced deprivation as it would be to one who has no concept of what it means to be without.

A great story that often repeats itself in my state of Maine. I have, on occasion, woken up to frozen pipes. Always lucky enough to not have a burst pipe. The electric hairdryer always came to the rescue.

Thanks for reviewing this piece, Paul. I can image the frozen tundra underfoot in Maine, ugh?

I remember those cold nights in our house when the frost was on the inside of our windows! The winters seems much harsher then and the houses were not so well insulated. Having lived through some tough times I think we appreciate the simple things in life and don't need the trimmings if we have a warm home and bed to sleep in and good food to eat. A poignant write, I could identify with these words, love Dolly

Thank you for your review and Comments Dolly. Life, when challenges seem overwhelming, provides many opportunities to rise up from those occasions and most importantly learn valuable lessons about Gratitude?

You wrote about this remembered experience with a clarity and an economy of words that I found very impressive. I would have to say, this is a far cry from a "murky puddle of thoughts." It is a clear and meaningful memory that has significance to you and was told in a creative and lovely way. I wish you good luck in this contest. MM

MissMeri, thank you, I value each and every review. I have been away from writing for a while and felt quite rusty in composing this narrative as a free verse writing.

That's an interesting & true comment in the notes re Life - a poem that paints a picture of social history at a very different time yet not so long ago with an impressive lesson at its core
