This is another extremely well-written chapter that always pulls me in and I am sad when the excerpt is over. I enjoyed reading it, as always. Well done, Jim.

Oh, I was afraid that the conversation at the most important part was going to permanently interrupted by the delicious elderberry wine but it seems there will be more voices to contribute to the narrative of the German actress that Allen has come to inquire about. Fun post.

Just as it was going where he'd been painstakingly steering it you left him--and us--hanging. I infer that Allen suspects the German woman is a spy. Superb dialog.

I think it is more that he needs to find out if Brücker is the spy, but you are right to be suspicious. Many thanks for the review.

Allan is getting slowly into the main reason if his visit: a nephew that Heather didn't know about it. Sadly, Tom tried to use Heather as a bite for the London crowd, but she manage to distance herself from his intention.

Many thanks for this supportive review. It was sad that a brother should attempt to use his sister thus, but that was Tom for you.

This was a wonder of a chapter. So much information imparted, but also wonderfully detailed description. I loved reading about the ederberry wine - took me back ten years to when I used to brew my own, along with sloe gin.

So did I, both varieties. Of all my home brews elderberry was my favourite. Slow gin was undoubtedly the more powerful. I used to do dams on gin too. Thank you for this lovely review.

Well, PANTYGYNT:

Flooding himself in tea aside, Peter Allen knows how to interrogate people to the point they begin to answer his questions even before he asks them. I wish I had had him on my investigative team years ago. I could have really used his skills.

Hopefully, we'll get the full story next chapter! The dialogue flows well and retains the reader's interest.

Just a few points to suggest:
'Anyroad, after that I took a back seat, looked after the business side of the farm, and only involved myself with the guests on the odd occasions when the party were restricted to the few genuine country people who'd been in on it from the early days.'

'Well, as you know, it eventually come down to selling some of the land, in order to pay for it all. - for consistency, I think the speech mark after 'days' needs to be removed.

'So Harry Mortimer was part of the house party scene was he?' he asked. - comma after 'scene'?

'Did you ever have any foreign visitors to these parties?' asked Allen, dropping the important question in, as casually as he had the others. You mentioned a German woman last time, if I remember rightly.' - speech marks needed before 'You mentioned..'

'Here's to victory then!' he announced raising his glass a second time, having ascertained on the first sip that the stuff was drinkable. - comma needed after 'announced'

Cheers
Judy

Ah, I knew Allen was looking for the German connection, and it won't be long to finding a connection to the German airman too, I'll be bound, I've grown very fond of your book, and will continue to do so, excellent tale telling, well done, blessings Roy

You've strung us along nicely here! Just beginning to get somewhere when the flow is abruptly halted by the arrival of Julia and her father - and the elderberry wine. Pernicious stuff! I used to make it but could never get it quite right. Even the kitchen sink seemed to shudder when I poured it away! I had much more success with elderflower.
'Swart' - what a lovely word. Haven't seen it in ages.

But that is life. Someone always comes in at the wrong moment. Many thanks for this review. I was the opposite, OK with the berry and not so good with the flower. Shall we go into the wine business together? Many thanks for the review.

I reviewed a rater good modern sonnet of Katherine Kean's the other day. She had glowing things to say about your recent course.
