This is a most useful chapter as it refreshes the eader's memory of the earlier parts of the story. Julia sounds as though she has grown into a most interesting, capable young woman. Her story has yet to be told, but when it is, it will be a very intriguing tale indeed. I do hope Jack returns from his incarceration as a POW. It would be a sad thing if he succumbs to his wounds far from home and all those who love him.The farmhouse does sound luxurious, doesn't it? I had forgotten about the chandelier in the hall. Good old Josh!! Never one to do things by halves. An enjoyable read Jim. I can't wait for the next chapter. Hurry please. cheers Cass

I have seen farmhouses like this as well as others that are a lot less grand and where the farmer has a second, paid job like driving a truck. It is a strange profession. Generally speaking, the bigger the farm, the wealthier the farmer.

Many thanks for this six star review.

Peter Allen 's reminisces as he sits in Heather's kitchen is a good reminder of the family history to this point. Reads well. Loved the description of the hallway and its impact. Great chapter Jim, cheers

Another fine chapter, Jim, with some skilful and natural insertion of backstory. I like the way Allen compares the detail of this visit with his earlier one eighteen years ago and his diplomatic approach to the matter in hand is just as one might have expected from the character you've developed. The dialogue's in perfect pitch, as are the reactions of the Bache's to this unexpected visit.

(I had forgotten that tapping of the telephone cradle to attract the attention of the operator!)

A couple of typos to fix and one suggestion:

It's (Its) owner, half a head shorter than his daughter

designed the place, back in the days of Queen Victoria, to be a reflection of his own success(, which the hall was).

A broad staircase swept uwards (upwards) on Allens left

By-the-by, I was born in 1943 and spent my first years in Acton Burnell rectory with my grandparents while my parents were on a tour of duty in Trinadad--so I feel a vicarious connection with these chapters!

Thank you for this splendid six star review and for picking up on those few things. All much appreciated.

There will not be many who remember those two piece telephones nowadays. Straight after the war we moved into a cottage in the Dorset village of Sutton Poyntz. We didn't have the telephone but we were next door to the waterworks and were allowed to use theirs, which was one of those old two piece models, and I remember watching my mother doing just that jiggling of the cradle. Funny how those little things stck in the memory for no apparent reason, but I was so glad it had.

Do you remember anything of Acton Burnell in those days? The whole saga is being played out almost on your doorstep

No, not really. I was still more or less a babe-in-arms!

I like how you wove in bits of their previous meeting 18 years before. It must be hard again for Allen to bring up some unpleasantness from the past. Wonder what Heather's reaction will be.

Many thanks for this six star review and for the alert over that possessive, which I have just rectified.

Good chapter. You are setting the reader up for what should be a walk on eggshells with Allen questioning, but not too flagrantly, the Baches. I know he has to be cautious when speaking about Heather's brother's affair with BrĂ¼cker's mother, and that Brucker is part of Heather's bloodline. We'll just have to wait and see how it plays out.

Allen returns and is welcomed here as an old friend and his intervening absence is soon forgotten as they were are all re-acquainted at Jericho Farm. A build up to here information which will soon be shared with this family, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

I am all atwitter while I wait impatiently for the bombshell to explode around the Bache table. I have no doubt that there will be much excited worry over how to accommodate this addition to the Joliffe family. Obviously he would not be in line to supplant Heathers portion of the family inheritance, would he?

Ha, ha. As we say in the black community, "My bad." I am so into this story, I can hardly wait for the next shocking development. I will just have to curtail and control my impatience.

I always enjoy these visits to Jericho Farm with Mr. Allen. It's such a pleasant, friendly place to be. This time, the description of the Hall is revealed in all its glory, and hard to imagine as part of the farm house. I'm anxious to see how the news of young Tom's illegitimate son will be taken. Great work, as always.

Your final point is exercising several readers. It may be some time before the occupants will become aware of that - on the grounds of national security. Many thanks for the lovely six star review.

Quite a reunion after eighteen years. Everyone relatively unchanged except for a little aging. I was as surprise as Allen was about the hall. You've never guess it from seeing just the kitchen. I wonder what the rest of the house looks like?

Do you remember when Felicity showed Lady Cecilia round Jericho not long after it had been built? (That was way back in Book 1) Old Josh had big ideas, a bit above his station.

Many thanks for this kind review.
