Oh, how my heart goes out to you, Liz. The only thing more frustrating than dealing with the Social Security Administration is the DMV. But either is horrendous. But can you imagine working for one of those organizations on a daily basis. Good luck with finding the missing statement.

I recall the ball-park figure--it suffices for my purpose of estimating the break-even point of taking it early or waiting--seems to be about age 77--i.e., if I live longer than that, I'd make more in the long run by having waited to file at full-retirement age (66.5) vs at 64.

I was expecting a few more fireworks with this absurd situation. You sound rather resigned. Wise of you, actually, to conserve energy. As you so rightly point out 'the lowly citizen can never win'. This has happened to me in a slightly different context and I was bouncing off the walls (of my 38-year residency occupation) in exasperation.

This seems so complicated when it shouldn't be, Liz, but that's the gov't for you. I believe you have the right info and they should honor your request. You did a great job expressing your thoughts about this dilemma. I hope it is cleared up ASAP.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

One can not fight the computer nor a government facility.... They are correct even when with due diligence we prove them to be wrong. Good luck with your battle. smiles, Carol

Oh boy. You obviously suffer from the same disease I do - keeping track of my administrative papers is a nightmare for me. Even worse is keeping track of the passwords - our government advises us to have a different one for each site, but gives no helpful advice as to how to keep track of them all. And as you state - three wrong tries and that's the end of your access.

I continually forget my bank password, have to recreate each time. I normally use the same password for everything, but the bank requires numbers as well as letters.

Oh no! I'm so sorry you ran into this problem. I thought we had to create that SS account early on. I would think just having the number and your name should suffice. Hope you find one of the statements soon! đ???

Every article in AARP etc urges us to wait but it doesn't make sense especially if we die before age 70; and like you said if we draw early, by a certain point, we'd break even.
-
Too bad we don't get a sneak preview of our DOD. Then again, good thing we don't.
-
DOD? Department of Defense? Should I be worried?
-
DOD (vs DOB)

Oh that one. No, that one God likes to keep us trusting Him for; not for us to know.

Does this mean you will never be eligible to draw a SS check?. Your super-safe places may be like my purse and my file cabinet. They both have something in common with the Bermuda Triangle.

I guess my check will end up here in the twilight zone.

OK, this is a gem, albeit a sad and frustrating gem. I'm glad you find the humor in bureaucracy because I don't. But let's get to it. Your style: light, witty, effervescent. Your structure: professional and enjoyable. I can't find a fault - nor do I ever want to find fault in writings - in this gem of a piece. Good things come in small packages, and this one is a good enough for a six. Yeah, I want to be your acolyte and learn to write better.

Bureaucracy is a mindless, headless beast that makes all the rules, and it seems run by very dictatorial individuals without mercy or compassion, that seem to delight in lauding it over their victims, if they don't want to, they'll pass you on to the next person, eventually leading back to them, result...absolute zero. Beautifully written, blessings Roy
