What a terrific poem. Well-written, interesting, thought-provoking, and a history lesson to boot. You're absolutely right, unless we are a hundred percent Native American, our ancestors probably suffered a similar fate. It's by the grace of God that we're here. Well done.Good luck with your contest.

This is a nicely rhymed ode to your famous and lucky ancester. It is cool to know you are related to someone on the Mayflower, I am trying to do my family tree now. I had forgotten that they originally were going to sale in two ships.
Good luck in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy

Well that is very interesting, Beth. I loved your poem. I am a descendant of the Mayflower, but the Baker's are well accounted for. They stem back from Liverpool, England where they embarked on their journey to the New World.
But just imagine all the rest, including you who may not know that and can descend from that wee boy. Ulla:)))

Thank you Ulla. I think the ones who embarked from England were supposed to be the ones one the Mayflower but when the sister which came from the Netherlands kept taking on water they had to load all those people on the Mayflower so it way overcrowded. I think I remember that name from the list.

Wow - an interesting poem with an interesting background and to discover you are related through time. I love doing ancestry but never have gone back that far. I know my husband's adopted family was related to Abraham Lincoln. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! Beth, this is a poem deserving six-stars. You have done such a wonderful job here. I enjoyed reading the saga of John Howland and the Mayflower. You must be thrilled to be a part of that family. Just imagine, ten children! No wonder there are so many from that proliferation. I also liked your rhyming. Well done.

This is an interesting rhyme about ancestry. I do a lot of family research through because I find it very fascinating. My more recent ancestors all came to Canada, but further back some arrived via the US. I haven't yet found anyone who was on the Mayflower. Thanks for sharing this historical in a poet way. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you so much for the review and comments. I've been interested in genealogy for a lot of years and it took a while to discover that link. Belonging to Ancestry.com helps.

That was really interesting. Of course, there might be some people here in England who have John Carver's DNA, I'm sure not all of them left the UK. And of course, more could be in the Netherlands. Now, that's a thought. I suppose that is how we began populating the world.
Your poem was brilliant, I've not got a six left, but it and the prose part do deserve the gold star. Well done and good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

Thank you so much for the review and the lovely comments. I know many of my distant relatives must still be in the UK. Almost all of my lines came from the UK. and many left part of their family behind.
