I really enjoyed reading your recollection of time spent with your father that became a pivotal moment in your development... and had a long lasting effect on your attitude to life. It's so important to see people as individuals, not stuck in a perceived role or age group or regional 'limitation', and also that close knit ties can be so nourishing and uplifting, not necessarily stifling. If only everyone had the insight of "uncritical acceptance and affection" that you gained.

Thanks so much for reading and reviewing ?Giant Steps.? I really enjoy these writing prompts. They bring back memories as well as sparking ideas.🍀

We're probably at a certain age and writing ability that we can make the most of our memories and what they trigger.

I?ve gone from certain age on to another kind of certain age, but I see what you mean.

Isn't it remarkable the things we learn about our parents in our later years...? A well written offering for this contest, Mystery Author - great job! ;) Should do well at the polls - good luck! ;)

It is always delightful to remember good times with relatives, especially the content ones. They seem to flow happily along in their lives as they give that sense of contentment to others.

This topic you bring up will endear the reader to the character: " What amazed me, though, was not Connie's ability, but the proud way her father bragged about her. No one had ever talked about me that way -- not in my hearing anyway. I knew my parents were proud of me, but they would never encourage me to show off that way." Many a reader will identify with the speaker. Very few parents believed in praise. They didn't get it & they grew up fine. But, did they? This was well written.

It's funny how a trip--even a short one--to an unfamiliar site can be a learning experience. I liked hearing how the narrator learned a new game and was so easily accepted by her kin. Moreover, her seeing her father in a new way was vividly described. Rod

What a wonderful story! Family can be a curse or a blessing. Yours sounds like a blessing. My parents family was from Grand Rapids, but my dad's brother had moved to the desert in CA. My mom's health caused them to move there too and I remember many fun days spent with my aunt and uncle and cousins. I very much enjoyed your story, I saw no errors and hope you do well in the contest.
