This nature 5-7-5, The Fearful Horse, has the right set up and finds the wrangler dealing with a skittish pony over unknown terrain. Sounds like no fun.

Your words here brought the scene to life with the horse twitching and the tussocks trembling, I was on the journey with you here, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

You painted a picture with your words followed by a lesson on grasses. I love to learn, so was glad you took the time to teach me something. You should do well in the contest. Good luck.

When i wrote the poem and posted it i made the assumption that everyone would know what "tussocks" were, as they are very common in my country. When I saw that some reviewers did not know, i was happy to educate them! Otherwise the poem falls down in understanding, which is probably why it will not be among the top entries when voting is finalised.

Gotta love those horse poems. And I learned a new word: tussocks. I guess the word 'midst' gives it an air of the past, a bit. Love that tip-of-the-tongue 't' alliteration with: twitches, thorny, tussocks, trembling, tawny. It's been years, but I do remember seeing the flanks of horses twitch when a horsefly or something irritated them. Nice moment captured in time.

You're the second person who didn't know about tussocks - I guess there aren't any in Utah. I get so used to what the landscape is in my country that I think these areas must be universal. (We have lots of tussock grassland areas, especially in high country zones where they muster sheep and cattle.)

We probably have a few here and there, but I never knew there was a word for them. We would probably say "wild grass."

This is a fine thought for the 5-7-5 Nature Poem entry. Sometime short thoughts can really hit the spot, touch our heart, and even be encouraging. Well done!

Hello, anonymous,

Great entry for the 5-7-5 Nature writing prompt contest. Good syllable count and connection between lines that facilitates flow. Nice presentation. I like the horse and nature theme.

A very well-written 5-7-5 nature poem about horses that can become nervous and fearful when they hear the thorny tussocks, trembling in the wind blowing on the hillside.

As a horse lover I was drawn to this and feel you have done a good job with the 5-7-5 challenge. Fearful horses are often difficult and unpredictable but can be calmed with patience.

Thanks for reviewing. Patience is a good strategy in most situations. A horse can settle when it trusts.

Picture perfect write with superb alliteration, vivid description and informative author notes; just curious, why you used "Scrawny" and not "Twiggy"-to sustain the 'T' alliteration; thanks for the treat and good luck!

Twiggy might sustain a 'T' sound, but 'scrawny' rhymes with 'thorny' and 'tawny'. 'Twiggy' means little sticks (or that emaciated fashion model from the 60s), and I wanted to suggest that a skinny horse would be fearful in that landscape, feeling the thorns and the wind chill factor.

'T' sounds underline the theme /subject matter - a sense of a somewhat inhospitable location for both man and beast - it's always wonderful to come across a new word - just checked out the definition for 'tussock'!

Thanks for your review. It never occurred to me that "tussock' isn't a commonly-known word. It must be regional to my country. i probably should put an explanation in a note below.
