That was really excellent, Bill. Freedom of speech is a toxic subject, that some take too far. As you say, you don't shout fire in the theatre unless of course, there is one. But we can't be shut up, the governments would love that. I'm for being able to state what I believe, and so long as it doesn't hurt anyone, I should be given that right. Well done! :) Sandra xx

Thank you, Sandra.

"Speech" needs to be better defined, that's all. We want to keep our "freedoms," which is fine. But we need to be a bit clearer about what it is we're really trying to preserve. I don't think anyone is trying to preserve the ability to create havoc, dissension, or chaos within society.

The difference caused by the existence of the U.S. isn't freedom of speech, it's freedom after the speech.

You actually aren't allowed to scream fire.
They can't be arrested for spreading hate, but they can be for inciting violence
You are so right that just because someone has a legal right to say something doesn't mean he should. :-) Brooke

You go! My opinion exactly. Too many farces under the guise of Freedom of Speech. How on earth does pornography fall under this? Photographs in themselves are not speech whether they be a Sunday picnic picture in the local paper or a nude sprawled out in a vulgar pose. Well written. I liked the artwork choice as well.

I can agree with most of what you have put forth here. Freedom of speech works both ways. If you don't allow what you don't want to hear. Then you will squelch your own freedom to speak. This is fairly well written. I think it could have been better. But I still see it as a five star production... John

"Just stand for something" - Good advice in this day and age of "Anything goes". This is well written and addresses the important issues of freedom of speech. Freedom to disagree with those who abuse this freedom as well. Good job.

Very well written, and should be a strong contest contender. You have a thoughtful presentation of the pros and cons of free speech and what should the limits be. Good point about those who abuse the freedom of speech in check. I am disturbed by sponsors who rushed to disassociate themselves from Paula Deen instead of standing by her. They bow to pressure from certain quarters. Others who have said far worse than she are allowed to skate on by. If an individual wants to boycott a product to express disapproval of something someone's said or don't, that's one thing. But for a small group to intimidate a company into refusing to carry that person's products, that's something else and to me it's wrong. judi

You're right. I think a knee-jerk reaction as we' be seen with this must be in light of some other actionable event we're not privy to. Thank you for reviewing.

Very good essay and I agree with all you have said. The govt has been weakening this freedom lately, or trying to. School students aren't allowed to wear certain tee shirts, etc. That's how it begins. Be careful. When they stop the speech f bigots, they will come after YOUR rights next.

Freedoms are all being challenged as we become more global and leaders see how easily these can be limited more and more without public outcry.
Comment from Evelyn Fort Stewart
What gets me right now is that everything negative is tolerated as freedom of speech. yet. They are trying to make laws to charge a minister with a hate crime charge if he reads the Scripture out of the Bible that tells the gay lifestyle is not acceptable with God. I have never seen our minister ever put anyone down or be cruel to anyone because of their choice, that is their freedom, but it is a sin just like pornography, stealing, cheating, etc. If everyone else can say what they wish a minister should not be charged with a hate crime for reading from the Bible. Good piece. Thought provoking.

You make s good point and our society seems to always be at odds with God's narrower views on relationships. Thank you for reviewing.

Nice little essay on a subject that one could write 500 pages trying to get over it and would still miss his ending by a few thousand more. Freedom comes with responsibility. If you yell FIRE in a crowded theater and you have dream that fire, you will get sued by whoever broke a leg in panic. Bonne fete des Etats Unis.
