A LITTLE naughtiness you say? Very well done! I was surprised at how much Latin I remembered without the translations, which I found delightful, though I believe you have more practice with the language than I. :) Excellent use of Julius Caesar's quote.

Thanks, Sean - maybe I understated the naughtiness. I'm not quite sure why both of these poems took off in that direction...

    Glad you enjoyed.

Oh yes, I see that you absolutely have a wicked sense of humour, Steve!!! What a hoot this poem is, as is your 'Pardon My French'. This one takes the cake though! Many lines here that crack me up, not least:

'Festina lente, she said, being sneaky.
Too late, I'd already veni, vidi, vici!
"Mea culpa," I cried. "It's my fault, so ergo,
I offer my hand for a quick quid pro quo."

I soon had my mitts on a bona fide squirmer'

Geez, I took Latin at school and it was never quite like this! It's six-worthy but I have none (not that it matters for a piece posted two years ago LOL!).
Cheers
Paula

Those Romans were a naughty lot you know, as too your average saucy Frenchman.

Probably the first time you got such an ex post facto review of this, but I laughed my ass off--We are still in PG land right--and had to let you know. Thank you for the best Sunday giggle yet. As she said at the picnic, "Excelsior!"

You have me in fits of laughter here in Ireland. You are
a master of comedy really, and not too bad at the old Latin
(I think). Great read super giggle.

My Dad wanted me to take Latin in case I should ever become a chemist - while I loved the Latin lessons, chemistry was probably my worst subject...
It is good that it has finally found a use, even if it is only to make people laugh - come to think of it, that's not such a bad ambition. Glad to see you poking around in the portfolio...

Dear Kiwist,

Write in Latin or English, but make a choice, it bores one to have to read notes. Good rhyming I will give you that, and even a little chuckle, but maybe in plain Aussie this would sound even better. (LOL)

Regards,

Winslow

I guess the point would be that there are many Latin words and phrases which are in common use in English. 90% of thos I used would be found in an English dictionary, so you could say that I did make my choice - just as valid an English poem as one that uses a few difficult English words.

The joining of two languages makes an interesting and fun read. Most lines I got the jist of the action. The author notes told me what I did not conclude and and then I laughed some more. Great piece and could have read on!

et cetera/so much betterer - OK, I'm already laughing after stanza one.
I actually took three years of Latin in high school and then encouraged my son to take it because of the huge influence Latin has on our language.
I love all your great illustrative examples.
And you fit them into the rhythm and rhyme of your poems so well.
Great humor.
This is extremely witty and entertaining. Brooke

    Thanks, Brooke.
Sometimes people wonder why anyone would study Latin or other foreign languages, but they don't see the immense benefits - the phrases I've used here are just the tiniest tip of the iceberg really if you think how the bulk of our Language is based around it - not to mention the knowledge of grammar and history you pick up as well.
    Thanks again.

yes, sadly, more and more high schools are removing it from the curriculum - I think when my son's teacher retired, that ended Latin in our school district, which had offered it for many decades.

In this beautiful poem find a very refined humor sense.
An excellent satire, which also speaks to me of great intelligence and sensitivity. I enjoyed reading it.
Congratulations!

Thanks, Laren. I am glad you enjoyed it. I know English is not your first language, so a poem that plays around with words like this one must be quite difficult for you.
