Hello, mystery author!
A hospital in Africa seems to be an exotic location for a five year old. I'm sure that you had many adventures and still have many stories to share. I like that you led up to that by describing the cats and kittens, which could be anywhere, and led us to the African sunset at the end. I wasn't sure on the word choice, violent, describing the sunset, at first I thought you were going for violet instead? It is an interesting adjective choice for the description of color, to be sure.
Thank you for sharing and I wish you the best of luck in this contest.

You know Kim, that word has been stuck in my mind. Heart wrenchingly painfully beautiful. On the Equator it stretches from one horizon to the other. Breathtaking. Africa is a violent place, my home, my heart torn from me when I left. Hiraeth. Irretrievably lost. I need a feeling word to describe the pain of watching the colors bleed together into utter darkness.

A fabulous story and I hope you share it. I haven't started your brother's book yet because I am currently reading four simultaneously. Anyway, of course, I know who this is because of what I know about your childhood in Africa and your parents' medical missions. I have friends in a good organization called Medical Ambassadors. I think you would like this group.

It was fun to write.

As I read the story, I hoped it was the beginning of a Memoir. I liked the clues as to where you were living. A civet cat, I thought. What country is that? It flowed beautifully from awakening at dawn to the mosquitos ending the day. It had a peaceful rhythm that I enjoyed. Keep writing and good luck with the contest. gayla
