Somehow, I missed this one. Lester's aunt is a terrible human being, and it is impossible to believe she had any kind intent. Lester did the only thing he could do by going to Heddy's family.

Thank you so much. This was a hard chapter to write. Gretchen

Losing his daddy would be enough to make a young child hysterical as Lester appeared to be.
In bad situations parents always want their children to "be strong." Sometimes, that is very difficult for them to do.
War takes its toll on everyone involved and in many ways.

Sometimes, good down home food and the comfort of others is all we can hope for to help us through the hard times. Thanks for sharing another fine chapter.

Hello Gretchen,
this should be a six, but you know how things go. You have a gift for telling a riveting story gal. I was heartbroken to hear about Lester's father. How many children down through the ages have had to deal with such heart wrenching news? Not just military members, so many police have lost their lives in the line of duty, especially in these past few years as society breaks down. What kind of sick person is Lester's aunt? Does she get pleasure in causing pain to others? She must have some serious baggage from her own past. This was just outstanding gal. I'm so sorry that I can't give it the award it deserves.
Have a blessed evening.

I think Lester's aunt likes to control people. And, I'm pretty sure she just didn't want to deal with a grieving young boy. Thank you for this. Gretchen

Thank God for Heddy's family. They are all so kind to Lester. Poor boy, what a horrible way to learn his father is dead. His aunt is a horrible woman. I'm hoping Heddy's family would adopt him but that would be weird for Heddy and Lester.
We'll just have to wait and see.
I'm amazed what a wonderful story teller.

Thank you for both this wonderful review and the six. Lester is only supposed to be on the island until the end of summer. Gretchen

Even though Lester's dad is killed at sea, there is something terrible about the news, but the fact that his aunt hid it from him is a little mean, but who knows what people's motives are, I don't understand some people, beautifully written, blessings Roy

She just didn't want to deal with a grieving boy. I think with his aunt, it's all about control. Thank you for this. Gretchen

Thank you, Barbara, for both the wonderful review and the six. It was hard to write this chapter. I was his age when my father died. It's a tough age. Gretchen
Comment from Liz O'Neill
Your opening setting is great at really gives the reader the sensory experience. This will immediately draw the reader in: "He looks at her and opens his mouth. He doesn't say anything, just lets a heart wrenching sob out. He all but collapses into her right then and there." this is a nice tribute to his father and to all service people: "Willis finally looks over at Lester, his own eyes red. "Lester, your daddy died a hero. Those navy men, they are some of the best. I'm sure your daddy was a hero, right to the end. You hear me, Lester? Be proud of that fact."
Distraction is great. They all did a good job with Lester. A great metaphor at the end with little juxtaposition thrown in. This is well written.

Comment from Sandra Stoner-Mitchell
Aww, that poor boy! I suppose his aunt thought she was protecting him?? I don't know, she's not exactly a kind lady. Perhaps she was scared she would lose her cheap help? But he should have been told. I wonder what she will say when he goes back to her. If there is a place to go back to. This was a sad chapter in this story, Gretchen, but it happened to so many men, destroying so many families. So well written, my friend, a virtual six. Warmest hugs, Sandra xxx

Thank you, Sandra. I think she just didn't want to deal with a grieving child. She's definitely not the type to think about what's best for others. Gretchen

All wars were terrible. WWII was a hrrible war because so many died. I remember kids who lost their dads in that war. Lester aunt shouldn't be hiding mail. Of course he would have be just as sad two weeks ago when the letter came. Your story is great. I like the grandma who only Heddy can see.
