During a cicada infestation back in 2005 or so, i heard that the classic SciFI movie Flying Saucer used the sound of the cicada as a found sound and played it whenever the Flying Saucers flew overhead. I rented it and the next day while walking to my class I finally heard the Cicadas as they had just broken out boy it was an eerier loud sound I did not know that were African cicadas

Jake,
Their sound is not a pleasant one to hear. Maybe the scratch on the schoolroom blackboard hurt my ears in time past(-;

This poem brings me back to summer when I was a kid because the chicharras (that's what my hispanic family calls them) would all buzz at the same time. You've really captured such a seasonal sound and the sensation of what it's like to live in a place where the cicadas are everywhere. Well done and happy writing!

Hi!
Not quite sure the sound is the most pleasant one, but it is a sign of hot summer weather.
Thanks for your generous comments.

This 5-7-5, Cicadas Make Lots of Noise, has the proper formatting and reminds us that the insects come out every few years and make that ear-zinging sound all day.

To me. this is the sound of summer. I like your entry for the 3 line poetry competition. The cicadas will be very loud this year with the double hatching although, I haven't noticed too much difference so they must not have made their way this far north yet. Good luck in the contest.

Thanks for your good wishes. Their sound is not pleasant for sure IMHO. The double hatching is an unusual occurrence.

yes, yes, yes, and they grace us with their crispy little carcasses stuck to all kinds of places. I am not fond of them, but they're not around too long.
Summer Hummer is a cute, third line. Brought a smile. Thanks.

Katharine,
Pleased you liked this and my last line. I do not favor their incessant buzzing. Fortunately, the double hatching is an unusual event.

The heat, sweat and the sound of cicadas are all part of Summer.
Personally I don't mind their call but I guess it depends on how many are in your area. .. their mating call can become a problem.
I know they come in many rainbow colours.
I love your closing line :
Summer
Hummer
Seeing their call is produced by their drum-like tymbals.abdomen, even Drummer would have been a cool ending too.

You did your homework on the sound made by them! They do come in a rainbow of colors.
If you multiply 13 by 17, the result will be the next time in years this swarm will coincide.

Thanks for your support for my contest poem post.

Excellent, though sometimes annoying, the Cicada does (to me) have a very interesting sound, as they do go on for some time you can almost hear a beat, very well written, best wishes for your contest****kahpot

They sure can keep me awake at night as summer warms and my windows are open! I had no idea how loud they are...
(I had to smile while researching, to discover female Cicadas are 99% of the time, silent!)
Not true of we humans!
Love your "summer hummer" line!

Thanks, as always, for your response to this noise (-; Of course, if your cicadas are the 17 year variety, it will be quiet next year!
The cicadas are quite colorful in different places in the world.

In MA our 17 year "brood" is not expected until 2025...
Great! Plenty of time to buy those soft earplugs!

Hi Mark, you are correct. Cicadas do make a lot of noise. Actually, they make a racket. During the summer, when we have the windows opened, they are so loud that we can hardly hear our TV. When we first hear them, we are enchanted, but by the end of the summer, they become an annoyance. The yin and yang of life. Well done. Margaret

Margaret,
If you have the 17 year variety, next year and many years later you will be bothered again. Look up the various varieties. Some are quite colorful.

Hi, Mark. The 17-year cicadas are just emerging around us. By next week they will be out enmasse. I remember their humming all too well. I really like your last line which truly summarizes what we'll hear. Rod

Rod,
Lots of interesting sizes and colors I found on the internet. The ones you will see soon are not among the most colorful,
Thanks by your stopover.
