This is another excellent chapter. The hook at the end is great, and I definitely want to keep reading. I do not see any room for improvement. Have a blessed day.

Thanks so much, Lee. Not too many options for him, but where there's a will, there's a way.

Interesting set of coincidences, but the story is moving along. As Alan is telling the story, we already know he doesn't die. Unless he is a ghost. Magic does exist in this world.
notes:
I'm hoping, should the need arise, that just the threat of a gun will be enough to accomplish my goal of getting the hard drive back.
- This actually makes him look worse, and not smart. Better to go with a real gun.

I knew you in particular would not like this part and would see it this way, but Alan really only wanted to use the blank gun as an inducement to get his hard drive back. That's just him, like him or not.
-
No, no. It was not about liking this part or not. I was only concerned with does that action 'fit' with his experience, intelligence, and circumstances he could enter, given the overall story arc of his journey.
But none of that matter, as long as the author is satisfied with the story.

Oh dear, this is not boxing well. That Warren is a piece of work, but not harmless in any sense or form. I can't wait to see how all this will end. All the best, Ulla:)))

Thanks, Ulla. Of course he'll get out of it because he's telling the story, but the question is how? Read on.

Good chapter, lots of action, and ends on a great cliffhanger. With only three chapters left, I hope you aren't going to leave it with Alan six feet under. A prop pistol can be very painful if discharged only a few inches a from a body, but a rifle is deadly. Seems like Alan is taking a toy to a gunfight.

Thanks, Carol. In this situation, the blank gun won't be of much use. He was hoping it might only be needed as a threat to force Warren to give him the drive. Oops. He didn't anticipate Warren might get the drop on him first.

This doesn't look good for Alan/David. I am wondering how he's going to get out of this mess. The only person who knows he's there is Ginnie and she's back home. Not a good situation to be in. I can't wait to see how you work this out.

I don't think he anticipated Warren would get the drop on him first. Bit of a wicky sticket he's in now.

This certainly is a big change from the previous parts of the story which for all intents and purpose was smooth compared to the current situation.
Bad move on Alan's part keeping the blank gun purchase away from Ginnie. Where's the trust? She would never have let him go.
I liked the response of, "two of a kind". It's a typical response but I found it to mirror Warren and his poker gambling habit.
Oh boy, I need to read the next chapter... I'm curious!
Great stuff. Sorry no sixes left.

Thanks, John for your great review. His thinking was that the blank gun was really only to be used as a prop to convince Warren to hand over the drive. Best laid plans...

Goodness, he's turned into a monster! And no gratitude for having his debts paid off. Now either Ginnie's going to come after him which is probably doubtful. Or she'll inform the police. So Alan will need to keep him talking. This is all exciting stuff and the more so because of his earlier celebrations that everything was going so smoothly. A great hook at the end and a faultlessly expressed and enjoyable read! Thanks for sharing, Jim. Debbie

Bit of a wicky sticket, wot? Thanks for your great review, Debbie. You won't have long to wait to see how this confrontation ends.

For such an intelligent guy ow did he get caught with his knickers down. Made himself look like a clown, and he should have known who was to be using the shovel. Was his maternal name Fife... like in Barney?

Well, I would argue that it was extremely lucky on Warren's part that he happened to be out hunting when Alan drove up and got the drop on him, but I liked your review so much, that I won't bother.
Comment from lyenochka
No! I sure hope that Ginnie called the police and have them sent to the address where she knew Alan was headed to or Alan uses the shovel to knock Warren unconscious!

Both are good thoughts. I love hearing you speculate on what will happen.

Oh JIM! You can't do that to me! Alan is a good man and deserves to live. Warren ... hmm, he has no scruples. I hope Alan gives Warren a hard knock on the head with the shovel! Perhaps if he doesn't phone Ginny she will call the police and send them after him! You have to do something quickly!! Well written.

Thanks, Wendy. Got your dander up with this chapter, I see. If this were Jack Reacher or Harry Bosch, no doubt he could get out of it, but he's just Alan Phelps. Does he stand a chance?
-
Jack Reacher kills many people in the process of getting himself out of difficulties, and in the most unlikely of circumstances and despite severe injuries he may have. I hope Alan will get out of this situation in a more realistic and credible way. Yes, I can?t wait for the next.!
-
There is perhaps a clue as to how he might get out of this, but of course I'm not going to let on what it is.
