I like Nonni, she's very sensible. Hopefully, Heddy will learn from her. I think Artie is hiding, he doesn't want to go to war and kill. But you can't hide forever without someone seeing and reporting him to the authorities. Now, I'm off to read the next chapter. :)) Sandra xx
I've missed quite a few of other authors I'm following, my life at the moment is more in than out of hospital having tests and goodness knows done to me.
I'll have to (be) nice to him,

Take your time. I'm trying to pay out a little more but if you're pressed for time, don't worry about reviewing. Thanks again. Gretchen

I will never not read your chapters, even if I'm late! I will also review to let you know what I think. Regardless of time, I will get there, Gretchen. Your stories are fabulous. xxxx

Hello Gretchen,
as you can see, I'm behind in my reviewing- life has a way of taking over. Anyway, I loved this chapter. Of course I'm out of sixes -have been for a few days. I loved the way you described Wilis' room, not having the same feeling anymore. You've got Heddy's character down pat, I love to see how little girls think. I hope she can understand that Lester isn't as fortunate as her, but then, children seldom see the big picture.
In the second paragraph, you left out "be" - as in be nice to him.
What a great story, I'm really enjoying this gal.
Have a blessed day.

I think Heddy will be protective over Lester once she gets past his being a boy. No six necessary, I just enjoy your reviews and your take on the story. Gretchen

Nonni seems to have been a very wise woman. And I believe there will be a friendship sprouting between her and Lester.
You can tell she's proud of her dad.
Mr. Arite is an interesting character, and I'm sure there's more to his and Heddy's conversation.
Great chapter, Gretchen! Best, JohnC

I'm not sure if Artie is as he presents himself. Who knows. I learn a little about each character with each chapter. Thank you for this nice review. Gretchen

OOOOOOh, I like that little twist. Much better than a spy. You write well. I have been writing a bit more these days. I am working on something right now.
I hope you keep cranking this out. I love Heddy.

Thank you. Got a while before I'm finished with Heddy. Hopefully early spring I'll either finish Miranda or this one. Thank you for the nice review. Gretchen

I like them both. :-)

Few things are ever as they seem to be in life, we just need to stay openminded and alert. LOL. I loved the last paragraph. "I should hurry home but I don't. There's no war here tucked behind this dune. War is in the houses, it's across the Atlantic. But here is the one place the stupid war can't touch me." Thanks for sharing.

Time has changed our lives. Once children played outside well after dark and now ... well, now we fear our own front yards. And so confusing to explain or for a child to understand. I'm glad it's not a scary ghost story... instead she has her grandmother's love to guide her.

Comment from Wendy G
It's good she has her Nonnie to give advice, and it will surely help her dealings with Lester. Yes, war for Heddy must be a puzzle, and Artie's explanation must be confusing for her.

Edits: I'll have to (be) nice to him
Who wants you (to) hurt someone?"

This is a good chapter as Heddy learns why Artie is staying in the doctor's house. Understanding why her country wants Artie to kill people makes no sense to her. The enemy are across the ocean. You have made an excellent point about war.

Thank you so much. Heddy will grow up a lot over the course of this story. Gretchen
Comment from Dolly'sPoems
It is hard for children to understand war, as even adults don't understand it. It seems odd to me that we are taught not to kill and then go out in a uniform and do just that. This is why soldiers come back after war confused and traumatised. Apart front the American soldiers being involved in the two World Wars, America was untouched by these two events. Another fine chapter in your story Gretchen.
small edit here:
"Who wants you (to) hurt someone?"

We did have Pearl Harbor. So not entirely untouched. But not like Europe. There were few safe places there. Thank you for this excellent review . Gretchen

Yes Gretchen of course and Pearl Harbour was what brought the US into the second world war and to be hones the British were grateful as we needed the support, love Dolly x x x

Of all that you've written, this s tory is my favorite by far. I love how Nonni comes at crucial times to advise Heddy. I wish I had a loved one's ghost visit me. Artie is a big mystery.
