Wendy you serve others on so many different levels you are the untimate caregiver. My mother was like that. She wasn't happy unless she was helping others. I do admire the many things you do for other including dog, foster children, cancer patients and grandchildren.

Therapy dogs and their carers would be a lovely addition to the oncology ward. Not only for those having treatment but, as you say, for the staff too. 18th August 2000 was my last day and hopefully I won't ever jave to return. Thank you for all that you do for them Wendy,
Cheers
Valda

Hi Valda, yes, I hope they never see you again! Lol. More than that I hope you stay happy and healthy for a long while to come. Interestingly, most of the people receiving chemo at present are younger people! Thank you so very much for this supportive and encouraging review.

This would make a good 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' story in a book about sharing. It is wonderful that when people can still think of others when going through critical periods of their own lives.

Hello Wendy,
I always enjoy hearing about the Sunny and the other therapy dogs and the good feelings that they bring to so many who are ill. Does it bother the people when the dogs have to leave and go to another patient? How much time do you spend with each patient? I love your kind spirit gal. Keep up the good work.
Blessings,
Tom

Thank you so much Tom. No, they are always just appreciative that we are there with them for whatever time we have. And it does vary. Some only can cope with five or ten minutes because they are very tired or unwell, but on Wednesday there was Andrew, with whom I spent about forty minutes, and the other worker spent about the same time with a lady called Sue. I think we just "read" what they want, to a large extent. But we stayed later than usual as it was quite busy. Some were finishing their treatment for the day, others just coming in. I suppose on average it would be fifteen minutes with each. Sometimes they are in the waiting room, and then the doctor calls them in, so the time with the dogs is shortened, as well.
    Thanks again.

Happy Therapy Dogs Day! I often think of getting one and my cat actually is therapeutic, waits for me as I walk, too, because I go slow. I hope it was a good day for you. Thank you for sharing a description of it.

Best wishes,

Alex

Thank you very much Alexandra. In Australia, what you describe are called Assistance Dogs which look after and support their owner, both emotionally and with physical tasks such as opening doors, retrieving dropped items etc.
These Therapy Dogs in Australia, such as mine, are our own pets but have been specially trained to go into the community settings and provide therapy for others, and so must be able to be always calm, and accept a lot of noise, excitement and being touched by multiple others eg yesterday at a Youth Drop-In Centre. We also visit hospitals, aged care facilities, schools, businesses having a mental health day etc. They offer comfort to chemo patients etc.
Sounds like your dear cat is an Assistance Cat, who is doing a wonderful job.
Thanks so much for reviewing, and best wishes to you and your sweet cat.

Thanks for sharing this special story of compassion and human kindness. It is always uplifting to hear such a story and nice interlude from too much news and lack of human decency in the world. ann

Thank you Ann. Yes, it is indeed little moments like these which give joy and much pleasure to others. I was extremely touched by this very thoughtful gesture.

The picture of the charming, aged dog illustrates your post well. I was impressed by Jane's care of her husband, as well as her ex-husband, and the adoption of the dog by her and her current husband.

Your therapy dog stories are always so inspiring and so heart-felt. This one is no exception. The patients are as giving as the volunteers and the dogs. How sweet of 'Andrew' to give treats to the dogs to be enjoyed later.
The story-telling is excellent. Your story brightened my day and brought a tear to my eye.
