I like the emotional journey you take the reader on through the eyes of a child. There is tension in the story regarding the impact of being different from one's friends and classmates at that age.

A short and entertaining story. Interesting that the mask released the fun. Paradoxical? This is well structured a your protagonist is an engaging character.

Great story. Concise and heartfelt. Not sure if it's true, but it reads like memoir.
I have a funny related story. I'm a preschool teacher, and one year I overheard the following coversation between two 4-year-olds:
Child A: "What are you going to be for Halloween?"
Child B: "We don't celebrate Halloween. My mom says Halloween is Satan's holiday."
Child A: "Oh. I'm going to be Darth Vader."
Still cracks me up to remember it. ><
Anyway, good story, best luck in the contest!

Love your story. I was a headmaster in a private elementary school and we had a few right wing parents who kept their children out of school the day of the Halloween parade because they felt it was satanic.
