Not sure how this one slipped by me, but here I am, better late than never to review. Debi, it is so hard to lose a furry family member. Whatever it is we can do for them is small in relation to the love and memories they give to us! Thank goodness your husband heard that little whimper! It brought an angel into your life.

I'll have you know, any story like this which involves a dog tugs at my heart strings.
Through my 68 breathing years, starting when I was about six,,there has been very little time when a dog was not in my life. We currently have three...
Debi, a wonderful story told in rhyme as only you can.
Best of luck in the contest.
Cheers to Rock Pile Rascal,
John

John, just as soon as my heart heals a little more for Jan, I am going to write that story I promised you. You are the best reviewer and my first nomination next month is yours once again. You are the best and I love hearing your sweet stories in exchange. This is how friendships start and flourish and how Jan and I got so close. So for all those that say it can't happen if you never met them physically, never met the awesome people I have. You are awesome too. Thank you so much, my friend.

OH!!!! I am so sorry for your family's loss of this hero dog -- they're all heroes really, aren't they? Your poem is a story so sweet! I am assuming the tale is a true one. Great poem!

Oh Debi, this poem is so heartfelt and filled with vivid imagery. I could see the whole scene. Was there only one pup under the rocks or more? I wasn't quite sure. This poem reads and flows well and has good rhyming within. Of special note:
We walked into the house and we could not believe our eyes
Their dad holding a puppy, as he smiled he said "Surprise!!"
(Debi, I was raised a city girl and never had any pets and have no interest in a pet or pets, but even my heart would have been melted.)
From going around in my real estate houses, I know that Irish Setters and Labs are nice dogs. Well done. As this is a contest entry, I wish you good luck. Please accept my virtual six. Xo. M

Debi, This is a very beautiful and very well written rhyming poem about the little dog, Rascal, that your whole family loved. It was a beautiful little dog. You used very good descriptive words and an adorable picture. Thank you for sharing with us. We had a little calico girl cat we named Rascal. She died about a couple years ago. love and blessings, Teri

OMG! I love animal stories, and this is the most exceptional and adorable puppy story I have read in a long time. You included all the details about the children being told they couldn't have a dog. The story made me smile when I read the word, "Surprise." Considering how the puppy was found, your title, "Rock Pile Rascal," is perfect. Best wishes in the contest.

What a wonderful poem and a great story to boot. My favorite line, and he rescued us right back. That is exactly how it works. You explained it simply and beautifully. Outstanding. Terry.

A fun poem and story. Your rhyme is efficient but sometimes I feel it is a little forced and this makes the poem's effect a bit childlike. But then again, maybe that's appropriate.

A-h-h a story in a poem to touch the heartstrings - a doggie discovered by happenstance, so to speak but his canine loyalty shone forth - thanks for sharing this tale.

Well, I'm a sucker for animal stories - and for animal RESCUE - my heart is yours! This beautiful puppy was lucky to survive at all -and even luckier in finding a rescue angel like your husband.
Sometimes it looks like fate (or God, if you're a believer) has organized stuff just by being there before you - what 19th century revivalists called 'prevenient grace'. Your dog was coming your way, whatever!
Written in iambic heptameter (a favorite of mine) and rhyming couplets - that takes some skill to keep the meter going - and not a single half-rhyme in sight! Brilliant.
A black Irish setter? I love the Red ones, though they can be temperamental. Looks like your Rascal was just the perfect family pet.
Your last four lines are very telling - and I challenge anyone not to shed a tear: 'he may have been rescued that day/but he rescued us back'
And after twelve faithful years, it is completely fitting that the man who rescued him should be the one to shed the most tears.
A beautiful poem a bout a faithful friend. Thank you for sharing it with me.
