great little poem about a common fear - the fear of public speaking. love the last lines
Performance anxiety will reappear
as soon as the next event is announced -
a lifelong journey
rarely shared with the audience

I remember the first time I spoke in public I was very nervous had a hard time keeping my thoughts together. Then after a few years when I became a public speaker I learned a little trick that helped me a great deal the trick was to get to the event early speak with some of the attendees and make some contact with people in the audience. When you do that it gives you someone to look at and know that there knowing that you are doing your very best. Patricia

Hi RD, Yes, it can be an issue for many I remember when starting out as a new Nurse Educator and having to give lectures to a room full of Nurses, I suffered this, but tried not to show my nervousness. However over my 26 years in teaching, I became an 'all right' orator and enjoyed giving lectures and educating the young and at time many old nurses.
A well worded free verse
Cheers Chris

You're right 'performance anxiety' is normally there and I usually means we want to do our best and if used correctly we will do our best. I'm glad your granddaughter had you to talk this over with. Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us and good luck.

thanks so much, barbara - because she has genius IQ, most people assume everything comes easy to her but that is not true. jan

You have offered commentary on something many of us feel. even as we know we have something of value to offer. So we do it. We sigh and know we will feel this way again. I always pray that someday, I will not only not feel anxiety, but will actually find it fun.

Ginda, for me, the lack of butterflies in my stomach means I've become removed from what I'm doing; therefore, I ruin the moment. jan

Thank you for introducing us to Performance Anxiety. A great study, and thank you very much for your author notes. My late mother was a teacher too - it's very rewarding profession, though it has its ups and downs.
Good imagery, visuals and presentation. Thank you for sharing.

Eternal Muse, teaching is both the best and the worst of the world, but I absolutely love it. jan

You are so right. I used to say that to my students. A little performance anxiety gets the adrenaline going and they can use that to perform at their best. However if allowed to increase till it takes over, then it will hinder performance. I always said "It's okay to be a little nervous, but you must stay in control and manage it, so it goes "Thus far and no further". It seemed to help them to know that it was okay, and that they could manage it well. An excellent word of advice to your granddaughter too. Just knowing that you were managing the same difficulty would have been reassuring.
Well written and thoughtful free verse poem on this important topic. Best wishes for the contest.

A poignant free write and it is good to be a bit nervous before a speech as it keeps us on our toes, I have given a few speeches in my time and we always hope to do our best and not be boring, much enjoyed, well done to your Granddaughter, love Dolly x

I have always been fine as soon as I got the first line or two out, but there were times I almost passed out before I could walk to the podium. jan

Thank you for this, as you have taken the opportunity, while constructing a free verse poem for competition, to also discuss a subject which is widely experienced but not often studied. I understand more now.

Julie: I shared it with one of my students who is a magnificent singer even as a 15-year-old and has performance anxiety. She said it was like I had read her mind. That's when I knew I had nailed it. jan

I had to double check the definition for performance activity since I'm afraid the first thought that came to mind was performance 'in the sack'! However, I can report the kind you are talking about is still the major meaning listed.
I have some experience with the pluses and minuses of this. When I first met my now wife, she was an accomplished clarinettist, often performing solo pieces with orchestras. She was also dreadfully anxious before any such performance, although once she stepped on stage you would never know.
Your free verse poem describes the situation and the symptoms well.
