Yes...so many things nature can tell us if we only listen...Where I live, the sound of a rain bird tells me the Gulf winds will soon blow moisture in and spring is on its way...I could once tell the temperature of the day by listening to the sounds of quail echoing across the lake...Your poem asks a very simple yet profound thing: Be...in ..and with your surroundings as nature speaks.

Yes, Nika, when we listen to nature around us, we learn so much. Thank you for describing my poem is simple yet profound. Thank you for your review and for sharing your memories of the rain bird and quail.

A very beautiful poem as always Sis Cat. The imagery you have used here is brilliant, and I could even hear some of the sounds, like feet crunching up the mountain path.

It's not always easy to know if a poem will work in free verse. It's a challenge. You managed it quite well here.
It's an interesting message. The idea of "zoning in" is a brand new concept to me and I like how you expressed it. Your feelings, both positive ones and frustration with those who zone out instead, are expressed well.
Nice job.

Thank you, Lucian, for your encouraging review. "Zoning in" is a brand new concept to me, too. I did not know what it was until I saw all of these headphone walkers and cellphone talkers on a beautiful mountain trail. The words came to me, "I want to zone in instead of zone out." By the time I descended that mountain, I had a poem idea. Thanks again.

A very well-written free verse poem. When we put on head phones we cut ourselves off from our immediate surroundings and only listen to what is playing directly in their ears.

Thank you, Sandra, for your review of my poem and how headphones cut us off from our surroundings.

Good morning, Andre: I am shaking my head in agreement as I sit here in the New York subway train, on the way home at 8 am. I could never understand how anyone could feel secure walking or running around with the earphones on their ears blasting. How ridiculous and unsafe. They are distracted and unaware of the many possible dangers and they don't care.
I always tell my kids thatcthey better not ket me catch them out doors with earphones attached to their ears. (Lol) Thank you. I think it is important that you shared this wonderful poem and information. Much love.

Yes, Tier, it is dangerous to cross streets with headphones on at full blast. They call that distracted walking. Thank you for your generous, six star review of my poem you called wonderful and informative.

Drinking in the beauty of Mother Earth is far more satisfying than the cacophony of mindless noise. To be distracted from what is truly valuable is the bane of society. Great visualization! ...John

Love the premise of this, my fried. Tuning (zoning) in instead of zoning out. Well put.
Love the ZEN-like simplicity of this stanza:
Instead,
I listen to
the music of my feet
crunching this path,
the harmony of wind
blowing through leaves,
and the melody of the collar
tinkling around my dog.
Ha ha ha:
I want to yank headphones
from the ears of passing joggers
and scream, "Listen--
listen to your surroundings!"
Pitch perfect closing AHA image and well voiced :
Instead,
I zone in
on the patch of blue
up ahead
at the crest
of this mountain
as we merge
into the sky.
I like how the short line lengths lead the pacing swiftly with a fine, fluid flow.
Excellent free verse work.
Excellent phonetics too.
Bravo
Peace, Love, Light,

Oh, thank you, Rama, for your detailed, encouraging review. Walking is a form of prayer and meditation. This accounts for the Zen-like simplicity of my stanzas, like footsteps. Thanks again.

Indeed it is. I love walking meditation! Warmly, rd

I enjoyed the Zen-like simplicity a lot!

Now, I read Rumi in the morning when I awake.

Wonderful! He is my absolute favorite. Hafiz is great too...

Firstly Andre let me say i love the photo of the track, 'avenued' by the trees. It's so easy how that scene can inspire you just to listen to the music of nature.
Your words are great. Thanks for sharing

So true that is. What a great way to put life's daily sounds, messages and life into words. I can so relate to this people are so stuck within the realm of their phones, iPads and electronic devices, that they forget to stop and smell the roses, see the beauty of the trees and skies, let alone hear the water gently hitting the shore, the dogs collars, as they are out for a walk, the birds chattering, and so much more. Very nicely written. Sherman541

Yes, Sherman, one of God's great gifts is that dogs force us to slow down and listen. I was aghast to see people talking on their phones while walking their dogs. No app can compete with the nature around us. Thank you for your review.

you are welcome - I find everything so beautiful that I am always in wonder and awe of the beautiful things that have been created for us by God and why anyone wants to spend their nose stuck in a phone and game versus being outside is a mystery to me. ;)
