A fantastic poem for the I can't contest, Yvonne. I most definitely enjoy how you've taken the negative of "I can't" and turned it right around into the positive which is I can if I just look hard enough.
As always exceptional metre and rhymes and I wish you much luck with the Contest Committee. :)

Such soothing verse! When I am down or depressed I do not see these simple truths... It is warming to tuck away your poem for just those times--for indeed there are always and ever an infinite amount of opportunities to switch our perspective to that which is uplifting and available to all who open their hearts.

I feel so honored that you're tucking this away to read again. Thank you so much for that, and for the lovely review. I find it much easier to focus on the happy things than to sink myself in gloom and despair.

This a very good poem and excellent entry for the competition. It is certainly true that the best things in life are free. I love the illustration that you've chosen. Good luck and best wishes. Jen.

A beautiful poem, that speaks that 'hope is eternal' --- and you are absolutely right ... with so much beauty in the world, to not be alive and open to embrace that, is a waste of time and of lives... with all the stress and strife in life, we must focus on the good things, and practice having an 'attitude of gratitude' -- if we are to navigate through life with some semblance of sanity, joy and peace... this is such an important message.. thank you for sharing.. P.S. The picture is STUNNING!!

Misery and happiness walk side by side, this I know. The key is as you have said, enjoying the little things and seeing what is good. I choose to do this every day. Thank you for this! The picture is perfect for your piece. The sun peeking through the gloom to shed its light!
All my best!

Yvonne, how could I ever disagree with you. My sentiments exactly. Well, somehow I think you know that. I love your poem and the wonderful optimism expressed within. Good luck in the contest. Warm regards. Ulla:)))

Thank you, Ulla. Yes, I know you are a positive person. I think life is so much happier that way. It takes a lot of energy, in my opinion, to be glum.

I couldn't agree more!!

You did a super job, Yvonne, with your contest entry. Your lines read smoothly with great rhymes. The picture is beautiful and very appropriate. This is a great presentation. You give readers much to think about in their own lives. Your words carry much meaning for all. The title says it all. The small things in life are appreciated more than those 'things' that have little meaning in the big picture. Super job and best wishes. Jan

You are indeed an optimistic lady as the second stanza here proves. Had you been able to complete the sonnet course, you would probably have served this up as a Petrarchan sonnet. A few tweaks here and there would have done the trick. As it is it turns negativity into positivity, which is quite something when writing on the theme of 'I can't'
This goes to show that the opposite is true and you can.

It is the simple things in life that makes us happy. It not found by the things you buy and pay for but by the smile it brings to your face and happiness it brings to your heart, a smile or even a simple touch.

You're so right. Even when acquiring 'things,' I've found the anticipation was the best part. Thank you for reviewing.

Very well said. Yes, there are all the scenarios you write in the first part. But if we can practice the positive, even through small simple acts, we change the world. I found this to be uplifting. Excellent. Hugh
