I like the bright color imagery that this haiku gives. It reminds the reader that there is color even in a cold winter. The message in the third line is a lovely appreciation of the meaning of nature. Your haiku is excellent, so best of luck to you in the contest.

Your poem is beautifully presented and is in excellent 5/7/5 syllable count
Excellent alliteration in cardinal's contrast
traditionally haiku only uses caps for proper names, so I would not capitalize cardinal
You create a vivid scene with good appeal to more than one sense
put the final line in present tense - this is customary for haiku and really does add to the poem's sense of immediacy

Dear Teresa - a lovely work on one of my favourite birds. I have cardinals all year round, they nest close to my window and always come to my feeders no matter the snow. A well penned post - nicely done.
Thanks for sharing it.

Thank you so very much, I've been away from FS for several months and just felt compelled to pop back over. Maybe it's the hope of Spring that has brought me back.
Thank you again for your very kind words and thoughtful encouragement.
