Spiritual Echo: Love it, you took the words right out of my mouth - or at least, some of them. Mine would sound more like a rant, I suppose. I've had my "hand slapped" on two writing different writing sites but have since learned that you can't please everyone all the time. If I please anyone at all, I'm happy that I have created something which gave someone joy. I do believe that writers tell their friends to vote for them in contests. Otherwise, there is no explanation for the obviously worst piece winning! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these issues. Good write. livelylinda

Linda, if it makes the sting of your hand-slapping fade a little farther back in your memory pool, know that I have been literally suspended, locked out on four or five occasions. Each time I was made to repeat the words, 'I'm so sorry. I'll never do that again."
Quite frankly, I've wondered of I've been shut out of the committee vote contests because of my past transgressions, but I don't write for that reason. I do understand how people can look at that as a possibility, but there are so damn few votes in contests I find the regularity of that hard to accept.
Woman, thanks for all the starlight This is a very kind review and a generous allocation of stars. Greatly appreciated.

I haven't really tried to be in the top ten. In fact, I couldn't tell you who the top ten are. I like to know what people think of my little poems and stories and that's why I post them. Why would anyone want to cheat? It won't work in the real world when you submit to a real magazine. Spending real money to get ahead on FanStory seems a little desperate to me.

Cindy, I'm not sure who started the controversy, but there were very strong accusations hurled out that the only way to win anything here was through cheating. Several people have take offence and responded. In my essay, I ignored the 'sour grapes' and tried to offer some insight. Thanks so much for reading.

You've done an outstanding job on this essay, Ingrid. I like the way you've pointed out the childish manipulation inherent in the cry "it's not fair". And I like your segue into personal advice and experience. Again, you diffuse the complaints of "I can't (for one reason or another)." You can. Everyone can. If they want it badly enough. This is a 6, and I have none left. So sorry. :) Nancy

Thanks. You know, I should take the very first thing I ever posted here--sight unseen--can't remember what it was--and resurrect it as an example of how effective it really is to work at one's chosen craft.

Ingrid, when was the last time I've told you that you're my hero? Haha! I wanna be just like you when I grow up. Not many writers hold me the way you do, and I can tell that you've developed, through many hours of writing, a "naturalness" that makes your work seem spur-of-the-moment yet clean and polished.

What a gracious thing to say and illuminate each word with all that starlight. Thanks so much.
Like all things, the more you do it, the easier it is to perform that function. I very deliberately leave my original posts in my portfolio, for the single purpose of going back and reading them to see how much I've improved.
You made my day with your kind response.

I not only agree with your well-written article, I cheer it to the rafters. You're right. (1) Rankings have NOTHING to do with talent. (2) Tom is running a business here: the precepts of Capitalism apply. Thank you for your clarity and eloquence.

It seems to be bubbling into a controversy, but my essay was meant to awaken some members to the fact that there are many things that can be done to highlight their own work. and yes, this is a business. We're customers, not members of the gir guides. Thanks for reading.

A very interesting essay that gave me increased insight into how the site works. I shall keep your advice in mind as I continue to enjoy Fanstory.
