You must be proud. Your great-grandfather was only a slave for a very brief time and then became the free man he was born to be and proved he could take care of himself and his many children and of course his loving wife. You are the descendants of a proud people who refused to be put down and work for others when they could work for themselves.
You told the story well. You are proud and boy howdy you should be!

Thanks Jesse, and to a discussion we had earlier. I did not use AI for any part of this story. I truly feel a sense of regret that I did not get the chance to meet and talk this man.

It's okay. I understand. When it comes to AI, let your conscience be your guide. You are a good friend.
I don't hold grudges especially when it comes to you. We go back a long way.
Take care, my friend.

This post is beautiful like everything else you write.
I would be proud of my great grandfather too. He was a brave man.
And I'm sure you have inherited that poetic gift.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful story in a poem with us.

A lovely tribute poem, done a little differently. The rhyming is there, and it is clear that Great Grandfather was an impressive man. I think you to are on your way as being known as a really good poet. Well done.

Thank you. I was told by one of my aunts, that being recognized as one of his grandchildren, she received respectful treatment that she had not expected to receive.

Wonderfully strong, handsome image, skilfully complemented with deservedly proud bio of your Great Grandfather. You've portrayed him as an impressive man, free in spirit, who made good his life despite the wrongful oppression of his day. Seemingly, he never looked back, always devoted to his family and responsibly looking after those future generations. His gift, in more ways than one, has been passed on. Well done, Nomi. Take care Debbie

Thank you Debbie. My biggest regret is of course, never having had the opportunity to meet and talk to this , in my eyes at least, great man.

What an amazing man and heritage. I am curious if any of the poetry of your grandmothers or your great aunt was kept and if you've gotten to read it. Great job on the poem. I would say some of that talent has passed through the generations.

In my first conversation with my grandmother, it was discovered that we not only shared similar writing styles, but we found out that our favorite poet was Paul Laurence Dunbar. This brought tears to my grandma's eyes. I was later able to creat an actual print book from her hand typed notes about a trip that she took cross country back in 1962. That book is entitled "My Vacation" it is listed on Amazon to this day.

This is a wonderful tribute to your Great Grandfather and it s marvellous that you have been able to trace your history back to his days in slavery. Such a sad story of the white race thinking they have the right to enslave black people. The trade was buoyant at the time and people made money out of it, including the British. I champion those who had the courage to end it.
I enjoyed your family history here as there was much love spread in your family and the legacy of poetry has been passed down through the generations.
A fine post, love Dolly x x x

Thank you Dolly, and I am very proud and happy to state that my daughter is a much more talented writer than me. She is currently wrapping up her first novel as we speak. Needless to say, I am bursting with pride.

How wonderful!

This should definitely have been a contest entry. I don't think you have to worry about the gift of writing poetry to have rubbed off on you, it clearly has. Your poem rhymed, made sense, and told a great story. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you Earl. Your words resonate with me deeply. You are someone I deeply admire because I believe that you always say what you mean, and mean what you say. I think you were probably born that way. :)). But seriously, your words mean everything to me.

Thank you for sharing about your amazing ancestry, Nomi! No wonder you have such a strong spirit. Your great-grandfather was so strong and noble and never was enslaved in his spirit. What a great legacy!

Thank you so much. I actually hesitated in posting this, fearing that no one would be interested in reading about my heritage.
