Hi, Earl. I have to laaugh because when I wa sin college my professor for Lit including poetry told us just the opposite. She said: Do not turn in any assignments with rhyming poetry, if you want them graded above a "D" Reason being when a "poet" is writing a poem and has to break his/her tain of thought to come up with a good rhyme, thye are diverted in their thought process instead of just letting ideas flow as in free verse.
(Makes sense to me and any poems I ever wrote hardly ever rhymed.) My portfolio is chocked full of award-winning poetry btw. So, I guess everybody to is own way of seeing things.

I gather this introduction of yours is just that ...only an intro. I look forward to reading your poetry, Earl.

Now that I have completed my novel, I will be doing some more poetry and short stories myself. Bless you, my friend. Bob

Earl,
I love your honesty. No two people are alike, and, they will never be.
I joined this site last year and did not do a lot at that time. I have half written poems from the seventies on slips of paper. This site helped
me to finish some of them and I was encouraged by the feed back.
I liked you poem. When another one 'jumps ' in you head , write it down.
I find the ones I don't write down, or at least the idea for one, it's lost.
Keep on writing.

I have a theory...(who asked me?)--

People generally like order in their life...
rhymes provide order.
I mean is you read:

"Though I was clean
my Mom was mean---
it was obscene,
she caused a RUCKUS"

Well, the average banana brain goes "TILT" and your subconscious screams "NO"--"SCENE!" She caused a SCENE!

This is why (my hypothesis lumbers on)--as children we were so taken in my Nursery RHYMES... They held our attention and (like it or not)--we began to expect that upcoming RHYME as the natural order of things!

I know...I understand. Lot's of poets out there (and on this site) that can weave a story and tug on every heart string without so much as a slant rhyme but still...I confess...I gravitate to your way of thinking.

What irks me is when "rhymers" are discounted as something less than poets. Not so! There are Free versers, poetic form writers, syllable and meter experts...and then there are poets who simply prefer rhymed poems...writing them and reading them...

I agree with you. Regardless of rhyme or form the poem has to MOVE me to laughter, despair, tears, SOMETHING!

I've written my share of unrhymed poems...but they are my poetic "others"--when I rhyme, I feel sublime!

Karenina

A very well-written prose pouma to introduce your poetry book. Each have their own style of poetry, You have the advantage of knowing your grammar well, That is my weakness.

I loved it. I notice your four criteria in your reviews but now this piece makes a lot of sense (and logic) to know the whole story. Honest, articulate and pleasant to read.

Strange, Stephen King has several times referred to himself as a "hack". I should write so "hackedly". (I sometimes makeup my own words.) Point being, our hearts and minds flow with poetry if you follow your own path and just let it go. So, I'm with you, I just let it go. Best wishes.

You and I are similar in many ways--and different in some ways--in our
preferences. I too like rhymed poetry, Weird Al, Longfellow, and limericks
and don't write much free verse. However, I LOVE meter; it's like a challenging, appealing puzzle. I like the irony in this piece: Though you say you love rhyme, you have none till the last few lines; you say you don't like free verse, but this is nearly all free verse--or prose.
Enjoyed

He he he Earl you made me smile! I also adore Limericks! I have noticed that when I metered my poems they sounded much better, it took very little effort and a lot of reward. But I appreciate free writes and anyone who uses words cleverly and you don't necessary need to be restricted by syllable count. There are many talented poets on Fanstory and I always try to recognise them. So write from the heart Earl anyone who does gets a favourable response from me, that's what you did here, love Dolly x

Like you, I love limericks, doggerel and poems that rhyme so your poems would resonate with me. The few I write are doggerel mostly and usually take a lot of effort. Rhyming doesn't come easily to me. Cheers. Judy
